Chess State Finals

On Wednesday, 5th October four extremely talented chess players competed in the 2022 Victorian Schools Secondary Girls State Final, which was held at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School in Keilor East.

The four finalists were (L-R) Malia Nimaya, Maeve Harkess, Alexandra Fitzgerald and Marinella Salvador, all from Year 8, seen here with our Principal, Mr Aaron Smith.

The competition was fierce from the 10 other schools who took part, with nearly half of their competitors in the older year levels (the competition being open to years 7-12).

Pakenham Secondary College has an excellent chess record, having previously taken out the title at the National Interschool Chess Championships in 2018. The College have not competed in competitions since 2019 due to the Covid lockdowns.

As this is the four young students first year competing, it is a remarkable achievement, and we look forward to seeing where their journey with chess will take them in the future.

The final winning scores for the top 3 place-getters were:

  • Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School – 19.5 points
  • Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar School – 10.5 points
  • Pakenham Secondary College – 10.5 points

The Pakenham Secondary College team came third, just missing out on second place in a tie break.

Star News put the girls on the front page of the newspaper recently - the article is available online at https://pakenham.starcommunity.com.au/news/2022-10-13/pakenham-secondary-college-one-of-the-best-in-the-state/

A brilliant effort from our young team who competed on Thursday, 20th October in the Secondary Open State Boys Chess Final, which was held at St Oliver Plunkett's Primary School in Pascoe Vale.

Our five players: Lachlan Groves from 7.1, Amrit Dhillon from 8.4, Sinsarut Chitkanwong from 8.6 , Owen Hampton from 9.5 and Ed Ryan Evaristo from 11.2 all played very well.

Sinsarut Chitkanwong was our best player of the day with five wins, followed by Amrit Dhillon with 4.5.

Well done to all of the players who have worked so hard this year and made it through to both the Regional and State Finals.
