Celebration days

Last Sunday I had the pleasure of attending our Spring Soiree celebrating the musical talents of our secondary students. The Wind Band, Treble Choir, Concert Band, Senior Guitar Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Junior Swing Band, Swing Band and Chamber Choir entertained an appreciative audience. In addition, a small presentation was made to our 28 Year 12 musicians in recognition of their service to the College. It was a brilliant night.

The Chair of the Men of John XXIII, Eric Maroni, and his committee are to be commended for an excellent breakfast function last week. Having a group of John XXIII College Dads sharing their parenting successes and challenges was enlightening. Our parent and guest panel was excellent, and it was also great to have our previous Chairs of the Men of JTC, James McMahon and David Thompson, present as well. Having over 170 Dads in attendance recognises the wonderful sense of community evident at our College and the importance of engagement with other parents.

I read a beautiful Gospel reflection from Fr Tom Scirghi SJ last weekend and he included the expression:

‘Joy shared is doubled, suffering shared is divided.’

The joy of listening to music and the sharing of stories from our Dads are important rituals. Similarly, the support afforded by our extended community can provide great comfort in times of trouble and suffering.

We think of our Dads this weekend for Father’s Day and recognise all our parents for the wonderful contributions to their own families and the wider John XXIII College family.
