Prep News

Miss Gemma Jackson (Prep AHOS)

This week we are looking at some positives to lockdown. We have decided to have some fun dress up Zooms this week. On Monday, we dressed like we were going to the beach because our word of the week was beach. It was nice to dream about eating ice-cream and swimming in the ocean on a nice summer’s day! It can be good to escape the lockdown thoughts. We asked a few students what their favourite thing about lockdown is. Enjoy their answers below.

Eva S (Prep G) I can have more family time with mum and dad, and more TV every day.

Zaniel Y (Prep G) - Watching TV for the whole day.

Olympia M (Prep R) - During Home Learning I love to stay with my mum.

Varun A (Prep R) - I get to sleep in the morning and not wake up early. I can play with my sister during snack and lunchtime.

Archer K (Prep A) - My favourite thing about lockdown is playing with my dog Luna because she is fun and she makes me happy.

Anhad K (Prep R) - We do activities, my family helps me and they are with me all the time.

We had a great time during the Book Week activities this week. The Preps have also been working very hard at learning addition. This week we have been practising our word problems and the students are making their teachers very proud!

Year 1 and 2 News

Mr Jevon Scandrett (Year 1/2 AHOS)

Year 1 and Year 2 students were excited to celebrate Book Week this week! Students across all Year 1 and Year 2 classes have been completing daily activities in line with a variety of picture story books. It has been wonderful for the teachers to highlight their love of reading and celebrate alongside the students. Students were also lucky enough to take part in a special Zoom session with children’s book illustrator, Sunshine. Everyone is very much looking forward to ending the week with our costume parade!

We continue to be amazed by the determination and resilience demonstrated by our students during these uncertain times. Please take a look at some photos of dragons students in Year 1 made based on the book ‘Ellie’s Dragon’ by Bob Graham.

Year 5 and 6 News

Mr Nigel Keegan (Year 5/ 6 AHOS)

Book Week is always a highlight of the calendar for our Year 5 and Year 6 students, especially the character dress-up, the Cumberland quiz and guest author visits. Year 5 and Year 6 students were fortunate to hear from two of Australia’s great authors this week; Nova Weetman spoke to Year 5 students and George Ivanoff spoke with Year 6 students. Together we learnt about each author, how the authors come up with ideas and the process of bringing those ideas to life, and many other useful tips to benefit our own writing. We even had a go as a group at planning and writing our own story!

There is a lot happening in each subject as the end of term draws closer. Students are busy completing a range of assessment work and class tasks. Check out the photos of a fantastic recent activity by Year 6 students, looking at energy and the impact coal mines can have on the environment. Thank you for your ongoing support from home as your children apply themselves and demonstrate continuing progress with their learning.

A message from our Primary School Year 6 Captains

Kisali P and Owen M

At assembly on Monday, we focused on the topic 'Resilience'. Resilience is about coping with challenges, bouncing back from setbacks, or simply getting through rough times. At assembly we showed everyone a short clip about a group of children that are given dolls. But whatever they try to do to knock them down, they always come back up! This shows that resilience is about bouncing back when we fall and being positive about it. We need to be resilient during these times during lock down and stay positive.

Lockdown Disco

Miss Felicity Donohue (DHOS)

At 2pm last Thursday, the primary school students transformed their homes into spectacular dance spaces. Children dressed up in their best party outfits and danced the afternoon away at the Lockdown Disco. DJ Lawless spun in the hits as students bopped and boogied with their families over Zoom. A big thank you to Mr Ben Lawless for sharing his talents with the primary school and providing the backing track for an afternoon of fun. The primary school families appreciated the opportunity to come together virtually and create some happy memories together. We enjoyed it all so much that there will be another disco happening on Thursday 2 September at 2pm. All primary families are welcome to attend!

Community Service Year 6 Captains

Jasiah C and Maheen B

A very big thank you to all! We would like to update you on the progress in regard to your food donations. On Tuesday 17 August, we collected all the food and items that were brought into school by students in Years Prep to 6. With the help of Mrs Schulz, we loaded all the donations into the car. It was then delivered to the Food Bank in Yarraville, where it will be given to people who are struggling during this pandemic. We thank you for all the food and supplies that were bought to school and all the support you have given us.
