Curiosity in their gardens

Curiosity in their gardens - the 3/4 Excursion

On Tuesday the 3/4s went on an excursion. This wasn't any old excursion, this was to their backyards. How often do we really go adventuring in our own backyards and take the time to have a close-up look at what is there? The children completed seven different activities from a guide called 'Curiosity in our Gardens' by Kath Murdoch.

These were (1) Map making, (2) Close up drawing, (3) Using their senses, (4) Leaf Study, (5) Cloud Study, (12) Measuring, and (20) Be!

The 3/4s will be going on an excursion every Wednesday until we return to school. I wonder where we will go next time?

Some of their photos and reflections are listed below.

Activity 5 (Cloud Study):

The children were asked to lie down and look at the sky.

What shapes can they make?

What do they wonder about clouds?

Two children at different houses, both shared the same image of a dinosaur. We may be in lockdown, but we are still sharing the same sky.

The clouds are all just grey but they remind me of a nice warm blanket and I imagine it wrapped around me. It would be so warm and cosy, so I would never want to take it off.

Noah 3/4ES

The clouds make me wonder how small I am in such a huge world.

I wonder why clouds move? Today only I saw a big, fat, black cloud that looks like more rain is coming. I usually only see clouds that look like toys or animals. They look so comfy to sleep on, but also dangerous when it rains.

Activity 20 (Be): The children were asked to sit quietly with their eyes closed in their backyard and to identify how they were feeling.

Nicola 3/4C

I feel calm and relaxed because the birds are singing a peaceful song and the grass is swaying beneath me.

Natalie 3/4ES

I felt very peaceful and happy. The words I would explain to someone is no interruptions, happiness and calm.

Ellyse 3/4C

I feel happy to have a beautiful garden. I feel calm and relaxed, happy to be in nature, warm inside and I am intrigued to try and identify the birds around me.

When I first went outside, I felt cold. Once I closed my eyes I felt peaceful, calm and happy, but it felt nice to get back inside, where it was warm.
