German Poetry Competition

On Wednesday, 20th July, students in Levels 4 – 6 are invited to recite a German poem to Frau Lindner and Frau Taylor at lunch time in the German room, in order to take part in the AGTV German Poetry Competition.

The annual AGTV Poetry Competition commenced more than 25 years ago and is a wonderful opportunity for students of German to enhance their German language skills, boost their confidence and self-esteem, as well as uniting with other German students to share a love of language learning.

The competition was announced at the final assembly for Term 2. Students were asked to select one of the poems (available on Seesaw) from their year level to learn over the holidays.

Only three students from each year level (4 – 6) will be selected to represent Rangeview PS at the Regional Final. The Regional Final will be held later in Term 3. More details to be announced soon. Should students be awarded a first or second place at the Regional Final they will then be invited to take part in the State Final (held at the Austrian Club in Heidelberg) on Saturday, 15th October (level 5 and 6 students only). All students involved in the competition will receive a certificate and prizes.

We wish all students involved in the competition ‘viel Glück’ (good luck)!

DID YOU KNOW?

By our German Captain, Tilly

• In Germany, there are about 850,000 different family names. The most common German surname, Müller (Miller), is shared by around 700,000 people. This is followed in popularity by the name Schmidt (along with variants such as Schmitt or Schmitz, this comes from the blacksmith's trade), with Meier coming in third place.

• The first ever Oktoberfest, dating back 211 years ago, was a wedding. That’s right, the greatest funfair of the world dates back to October 17, 1810, when a horse race was held in order to publicly celebrate the marriage between crown prince Ludwig and Therese Charlotte Luise Friederike Amalie von Sachsen-Hildburghausen.

Viel Spaß und Vergnügen!

Should you have any queries about how to best support your child’s German language development, we would love to hear from you.
