Getting Creative!

Rev. Dr. Michael Battersby | Director of Music and Special Projects

Music

The Creative Club is where the talents and artistry of our musicians and singers get fuelled. Our regular Chapels provide real-world expression for students as they work together on contemporary songs and lead hundreds of their fellow students in singing and worship.  It is such a privilege to watch the technical crew serving their school behind the scenes – on cameras, vision mixers, sound, lights, graphic media and stage management.

In addition to the skills our club members are developing so they can pull performances and productions together, these students are exhibiting personal and spiritual growth as they commit to learning about the creativity, leadership opportunities and life God has graced them with. Many of our alumni students have come back and are helping to train the team in practical workshops.

This term has been about getting to know one another, learning to flow together on stage with backing tracks, equipment and microphone technique etc. Our team led the worship at The King’s Combined Community Service and students put their own small groups together to entertain the school at the lunchtime ‘Fridays on the Green’ concerts.

Next term, we will see the consolidation of our hard work as the team performs at special assemblies, Governor’s Prayer Breakfast, King’s Got Talent and more.

Here are a few things our students are saying about CREATIVE CLUB

We are trained to lead a show for students and staff. We focus on tech skills, singing skills, and teamwork skills. I have been taught how to use the camera, camera switching, and to control the lights. I enjoy that we get to work together to lead beautiful and respectful chapels, assemblies, and church sessions.

We have built a community by learning not only how to produce a show but also how to better worship God. We focus on our singing, playing instruments and production skills as well as how to work together as a team. We have an assortment of skills and everyone has their unique place and an opportunity to show and present these skills by singing, playing or in production.

Creative Club helps share our passion of God across the whole school and invites others to help share it with us.

We help students better understand who God is and lead them in worship. Our strong bond of community and friendship means we can lead church services.

KCFM Radio

King’s College Radio KCFM is a rare and exciting student-focused initiative at the College where a team of 12 students have spent the last term being trained in writing, interviewing, editing and producing little shows that capture some of the exciting aspects of College life.

We have got real-time vox pops from Mother’s Day, Easter, FOG concerts, Athletics Carnival, Cross Country and even some ‘word on the street’ opinions about holidays, new ideas for the school and important teenage issues like lunch preferences, how to be a cool friend, and how to survive exam time!

There is a lot happening in the tech space which will enable us to stream KCFM Radio shows directly into classrooms and soon (with the Canteen) broadcast the live shows and programs into the quadrangle during break times and before and after school. We have also got some great interviews and podcasts lined up with staff, parents and alumni which helps us all feel connected. Stay tuned for live performances from some of our aspiring pop stars who’ll perform live on the radio too!

The KCFM App is now available on the App Store for iOS devices and Google Play for Android devices. You can also use the thumbnail icon on the SEQTA splash page to listen now!

Exciting new project in Visual Arts

Mrs Lucinda Hill | Visual Art Teacher

2022 saw our Year 7 students issued with iPads with a stylus ( Apple Pen ).  We are excited to announce that, thanks to Mr Ventor and the IT team, they now have access to the amazing ADOBE Fresco drawing program.

This term, after learning about the elements of art, such as line, value and composition, students practised their patience and careful attention to detail as they completed an A3 size pencil drawing of their self-portrait with the lettering of their chosen “Fruit of the Spirit” eg “I am love”, “I am peace”, “I am joy”.  They produced some absolutely awesome work, which we hope to display in a digital gallery on the school website.

Mrs Hill then introduced a new activity - creating a digital self-portrait. Students began by photographing themselves with their iPads, then uploading the image to ADOBE Fresco and from there they used the pen tool on layers to draw over it.

“It’s fun, easy to rub out and great to colour with!” a year 7 student commented

Students expressed a very positive response, saying that they “really enjoyed digital art“.  We look forward to the opportunity to explore more fun and engaging art projects using their iPads.
