JMSS Robogals Program

By Kylie Bailey

During Term 2, Sahiba, Meera, Ileesha and Dilu from Year 5 were selected to participate in the John Monash Science School (JMSS) Robogals Progam. Robogals is a program specifically designed to inspire girls to pursue a career in robotics and engineering. The sessions were facilitated by JMSS students, who used Mindstorm Ev3 robotic technology to teach the students different coding functions. The learners participated in mini challenges against other school groups, where they were able to apply their new knowledge and skills.

Sahiba, Meera, Ilessha and Dilu have written about their Robogals experience:

‘My experience at Robogals was very fun and exciting. We got to learn how to problem robots and how to use a colour sensor. What I found most exciting was competing in the relay race. One time we even got chocolate because we can third.’  - Sahiba 5C

‘We got to learn how to code the robots, learnt different features of it, collaborate with other schools and compete in small mini game competitions! It was extremely fun!’ - Meera 5B

The Robogals program was such a great experience! I loved that we got the opportunity to code robots using block-code and I got to practically apply my coding skills. I also learnt new variations of block-code such as, the ultra-sonic sensor, the colour sensor, and the switch block. I really enjoyed having a hands-on experience and got to collaborate and make new connections with people from other schools. Out of our 4 sessions, for 3 of them we had to combine with another school. I am so grateful for Mrs Bailey for accompanying us throughout this journey! - Ileesha 5A

I really enjoyed going to JMSS, and learning about how to use robots and competing against other schools. I would like to thank Mrs Bailey for taking me there and the JMSS students and teachers who ran the Robogals program. I will use all these skills and maybe make a new program for my ‘art’ robot. My favourite part was when we tried to make the robot stay in the lines using the colour sensor. It was great to interact with other schools. I enjoyed Robogals very much. - Dilu 5D
