VCAL Update

Dear Parents and Carers,

It is important to be aware of the changes to the Senior Certificate as of next year.

The Victorian Government have started to advertise the new Senior Certificate. You can find more information using the link below.

https://www.vic.gov.au/many-talents-one-vce

From 2023, the new VCE Vocational Major will replace Intermediate and Senior VCAL. This means the VCE will recognise different students equally.

Why is VCAL being replaced:

These changes are as a result of the Review into Vocational and Applied Learning Pathways in Senior Secondary School (Firth Review). The review found we needed to improve vocational learning in schools.

What does this mean for EMC:

The VCE Vocational Major is a two-year applied learning program within the VCE that will support students to develop their academic and practical skills, knowledge, confidence and agency needed to prepare for the world of work and further education and training.

Certificate options:

Certificate requirements:

  • Two year certificate
  • 16 units required
  • Compulsory Units: Literacy, Numeracy, Personal Development Skills and Work Related Skills.
  • 180 hours of VET
  • Opportunity to gain credits for SWL

Requirements for CURRENT Year 11 students going to Year 12 VCAL (VCE VM next year)

Students enter next year having passed 8 units in Year 11 (one must be English or Literacy)

They also must have completed at least 90 hours of VET or an SBAT

Moving into VM from VCE:

Opportunities to transfer from VCE to VM throughout the year are limited due to the nature of the Study Designs. For this reason, changes can only be made at mid year and end of year once units are completed. There may be some movement allowed during Step Up, but not once it is completed. This underscores the importance of Course Counselling in ensuring that students select the pathway most suited for them.

Pathways after Year 12:

If you have any questions regarding the Senior Certificate options for 2023 please contact Jess Wade or any of the Student Achievement Leaders.
