Year 7 & Year 8
Last week Salvado Catholic College had a unique opportunity to promote the leadership and the development of life skills of some of our wonderful Year 8 students. As PCG Representatives they completed an application process which then allowed them to challenge their thoughts and what they think they are capable of in life. Below is what they thought about the camp and photos of the Graduation Ceremony, some action photos from the official photographer will be available in our next newsletter.
Camp Hero is a once in a lifetime experience that helps young teens find who they are. The Camp explores what mental health is by looking at the nooks and crannies of the brain. You find out how to have a health mental state in yourself through a number of ways such as finding the effects of mental illness, what friendship is, self-identity silencing the self-critic inside you, which can lead you to coming out of the camp as a more confident person. The camp also explores getting out of your comfort zone and challenging yourself to do things that you may think are impossible, this can include a fear of height, meeting new people or just being yourself in front of others. Camp also teaches you how to strengthen a friendship and how to identify a bad one, during camp you might make new friends or became much closer with old ones. Camp hero allows young people to follow their aspirations without looking behind or being afraid of what others say, the camp is something all young teens should attend in their life, it is a place that anyone can go and come out more confident to be themselves. - Sean
Last week, the group of Year 8 leaders went on the ‘Zero 2 Hero’ Camp in Mandejal. My camp experience was amazing. I had an opportunity to disconnect from technology and enjoy the world. We had no sense of time.. so we just lived in the moment. I met so many amazing people and made so many amazing friends. It’s helped me gain confidence, through many activities like abseiling, high ropes, hip-hop dancing and rafting. This camp was based around educating young adolescents about mental health. This was an phenomenal experience and I’d recommend it for anyone. - Jazmine
Camp hero at first seemed to be just like any other regular camp but when I went through it changed my perspective of not only the Camp Hero itself but so many other thing too! Camp hero has been an exciting and full on journey, becoming great friends with people whom I didn’t think I would even interact with but the best of all however, was I have to say the extraordinary experience. Many of us throughout the Camp have conquered their fears showing numerous leadership traits and I hope that the opportunity to re-participate in one of Camp Hero’s events may come back to me one day. – Krys
Camp was amazing, the food, the people, the experience was great. Every day I had fun and learnt things about mental health and myself. I learnt that I’m a very good listener and I have good patience. I got to express my thoughts and feelings freely without judgement of others. The chef was awesome, the food he made every day was 10 out of 10. I made many new friends from other schools and strengthened friendships I have coming into the camp. I loved camp and be very happy to have the opportunity to go again. – Anthony
Camp Zero to Hero has been a great opportunity to learn about mental health and leadership. The revelation about brain function whilst having a mental challenge such as anxiety or depression turned a new page on my view of the topic. The empowering activities we took part in strengthened my self-confidence and my ability to raise others around me. Aside from mental health, the wide range of activities had me captivated and yearning for more; abseiling, a suspended obstacle course, rafting and more provided many opportunities to bond with new people and test my own abilities. Camp Zero to Hero was amazing, and I would leap at the opportunity to return for another camp. – Gabriel
