Week 7 - Junior Sport Update

Over the past few weeks, the Junior School Athletics Squad have been spending weekends and a handful of school days competing for the College. The season culminated with the IPSHA Athletics Carnival this past Monday 29 August. The carnival serves as a selection for the IPSHA team, who then move on to the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Carnival, the top five overall moving through.

The weather was perfect for athletics. Warm air temperatures with a cooling breeze had all the athletes primed for peak performance. The day started off with relays, before moving into the individual events. Our relay teams performed well, holding their own against some very slick teams from the likes of The Scots College, Coogee Boys’ Preparatory School, and Shore School. The individual events saw the SPC boys start to shine. All boys were very competitive in their heats, with a number of boys placing in the top three in their heats.

All boys represented the school well on the day and more importantly enjoyed the experience. A special mention to the following boys who performed at a level to be selected into the IPSHA teams:

Well done boys!

Through my articles in the Especean, I have tried to highlight some of the successes the Junior School boys have experienced in activities outside the College. One student I have previously mentioned is Dante Barbanera. Dante competes in Jiu Jitsu at a national level and I have mentioned some of his success. Over the past few months, Dante has been very busy pursuing his passion, and his achievements deserve further recognition, having competed in the following events:

  • June:         State Championships, held in Canberra
  • July:           Newcastle Championships
  • August:    Oceanic Championships and the 2022 AJJC Australian National                                        Championships.

Dante outstandingly won Gold in all the above events!

These are truly amazing results and so well deserved for Dante’s dedication and focus. Dante fits all this in around his schoolwork and, while representing the College in Softball and Rugby Union. I know the College community will join me in congratulating Dante on all his successes.

I hope that everyone enjoys the ‘quiet time’ over the last few weeks of Term 3 before we hit the Summer season once again in Term 4. The draft draw for Term 4 will be made available shortly.
