It is wonderful to see all our students back and settled in to their learning routines already, despite the busy start to the term. We have also welcomed several new students to our classes, and we are excited to have them and their families as part of our school community.

Thank you to the students who participated in the Anzac March with our school. It was fantastic to have our school represented so well at this important community event.

The highlight of the fortnight was our Cross Country Carnival. Infants were lucky enough to head down a little later, so missed getting wet! Everyone ran their best and had lots of fun doing so – super to see so many people loving running. Infants also had an exciting time cheering on their friends and siblings as they raced towards the finish line, and their cheers sure helped spur them on. Congratulations to all for a fabulous carnival.

K/1

K/1 has commenced the term by learning more about Anzac Day through stories and attending our school Anzac service. We have drawn pictures and worked together to write about the stories we have read as well as made poppies. Everyone is keen to build on their sound knowledge, and we are moving on to writing the letters and letter combinations that make up our sounds and words this term – some very clever skills are being built.

Despite the postponement of our Athletics Carnival, our students will continue practising their running, jumping and relay skills in preparation for the new date, Wednesday 18 May 2022. We hope lots of family and friends can come and cheer us on for our events throughout the morning.

2/3 Class

Year 2/3 have hit the ground running this term with the Anzac ceremony last week and the cross country. We have started to learn how to write an information report and will be writing speeches about a famous person later in the term. We are still working on our novel 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', creating our very own chewing gum meals. In mathematics, we are continuing to learn about place value and its importance when adding and subtracting larger numbers.

In geography this term, we will be researching a country and presenting this information in the form of a project. We have a big surprise that will come home this week that we have been working on with Mrs Golden in our gardening lessons and the students are very proud of what they have created.

It's been a busy start to a busy term, and we are looking forward to learning lots and having lots of fun.

Welcome back to all families to the start of Term 2 here at Boorowa Central School. We have a very jam-packed schedule this term with Cross Country, Colour Run, Athletics Carnival, District Cross Country, NAPLAN, Student Assessment and Reports. We look forward to all these aspects of school and wish your children every success.

Boorowa Central School's Cross Country Carnival took place on Thursday 28 April, in tricky conditions. Luckily, it wasn't raining while the kids were running, and no injuries were sustained. The list of champions and runners up is published in this newsletter. A big thank-you goes out to all students and families that supported and represented our school at the town Anzac Day march on 25 April 2022. It fills me with pride to see our students marching, paying their respects, and giving up some of their holiday time to reflect on sacrifices made by others in the past. It was truly fantastic to see. All students that attended the march, played the drums, or laid wreaths will receive an Aspire Award. Well done!

NAPLAN testing will occur from 10 to 20 May 2022 for Years 3 and 5. While students can't 'study' for NAPLAN, the best preparation is being confident, eating a healthy breakfast and getting plenty of sleep. While these tests are not celebrated by some, they give our staff a great understanding of how we can best support our students and also gives us an idea of where we need to improve. Encouraging your children to try their best and asking for assistance is essential for their success.

Assistant Principal Primary (Relieving)

4/5 Class

We have had a great start to the term and are focusing on becoming self-directed learners. The whole class text we are reading this term is The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. Our reading stamina is at 20 minutes, noting that some students would read all day if I let them. We are focusing on using interesting words in our writing and adding more detail. In mathematics, we are focusing on word problems and using multiple mathematical concepts to solve complex problems. In geography, Year 4 is researching different environments, and Year 5 is exploring the factors that alter environments.

Mr Matt Rowley - Year 4/5 teacher

5/6 Class

In the 5/6 class, we have finished our Anzac Day unit on Simpson and his Donkey. We are moving onto the second book in the 'Kingdom' series, titled 'The Kingdom Revealed', which we are very excited about. In mathematics, we are moving onto a unit based on measurement - time. While time can be a tricky concept, some tricks can help us. In music, we are beginning to work on items for SMArt and Drama Night which will take place on Thursday 1 September this year. We haven't had a SMArt Night since 2019, so we are very much looking forward to it.

We are continuing to focus on ensuring that issues in the playground don't affect our learning in the classroom. It's always great to see the kids enjoying themselves whilst in the playground. However, we need to remember to switch back to learning mode when the bell rings and to be ready for the next lessons.

We are looking forward to a fabulous term both inside and outside the classroom for the 5/6 students.

Technical and Applied Studies (TAS)

Year 7 Technology Mandatory

What a way to finish off Term 1. All students have cut out their aprons, tie-dyed, sewn, and ironed on their logo. I am so proud of how quickly Year 7 has picked up the skill set and the quality they have produced. Students will be moving into the kitchens this term. Students are reminded that it is their responsibility to bring their aprons to all practical lessons, wash them and have them ready in their bags for the next week. Well done Year 7.

Stage 5 Food Technology

Stage 5 completed their Food for Special Occasions assessment task, which required them to plan a party for a specific theme. Students were required to create a series of cupcakes that fit the theme. The class created some awesome final products showcasing a variety of themes. I am a very proud teacher.

We have started our unit on foodservice and catering. The first practical was Lemon Meringue Pie. Students learnt so many new skills this week including blind baking, making lemon curd, and how to create a smooth and silky meringue. Every student is to be congratulated on their ability to follow a recipe, and carefully listen to classroom instructions.
