2022 Western Open Touch Trials & Gala Day
On Monday 2 May, the Open Girls Touch team had a very successful day playing touch football at Bathurst (Learmont Park touch fields). Boorowa Central School was the only Central School that attended the Western Open Boys and Girls Touch trials and Gala Day. It was great to see our Boorowa students stepping up to compete against the much larger high schools. After departing Boorowa Central in the early hours of Monday morning (in clear conditions) for the two and a half hour bus trip, the group arrived to be greeted by thick fog covering the fields.
A sensational day of touch football at Bathurst saw Boorowa Central display their proficiency on the touch fields against the much larger counterpart high schools within the Western area. The open girls were unlucky not to cement a place in the final, going down to Mudgee High School in the semi-final. A final placing in the top 4 in Western out of 18 teams participating was outstanding.
Leading up to the semi-final, the girls in Pool D had to play teams from Parkes High, Kandos High and Cowra High.
Game one at 10:00am saw the girls come up against Parkes High School. From the start, they played intelligently and determined touch football. Driving the ball up and continually putting the Parkes girls on edge. Parkes scored first due to a lapse in concentration. Boorowa quickly turned the tables and scored through some great team moves. The 1-1 score was a credible result, with Cheyanne Grocott-Robbins able to get over the line scoring Boorowa's first try for the day. It was pretty exciting for the Boorowa girls to finally come together and prove they could play some great touch.
Game two at 11:00am vs Kandos High. Another exciting match with the Boorowa girls playing well as a team. The final result of a 2-1 win for the girls cemented their increasing confidence. This game saw Cheyanne Grocott- Robbins and Lily McKinley finish off the moves with two fabulous touchdowns.
Game three: 12:00pm vs Cowra High. In this game they finally found their mojo to cement a conclusive win in their pool, defeating Cowra High 6-0. Abbie Grant and Imogen Pye worked well together, setting up many of the tries. Isabella Piper again put in a tremendous effort by scoring three tries. Adding to the excitement, Abbie Grant went on to score two tries, and Cheyanne added the final try before the final whistle to seal a 6-0 win.
Game four: Due to two pools only having four teams, pool D and pool C had to have another game, so 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 thus, Boorowa met Cowra High again in pool D 1 vs 4. Although starting to get a bit weary, the open girls continued their winning way defeating Cowra High 4-0. All of the players stepped up, resulting in Abbie Grant scoring two tries, Cheyanne Grocott-Robins and Mollie McKinley scoring one each.
Boorowa Central was set up for a semi-final berth against Mudgee High School. This was a very close game with teams going try for try until the Boorowa girls ran out of legs with only two interchanges to Mudgee's four interchanges. The final score was 5-2 to Mudgee with Lily and Cheyanne scoring tries for Boorowa.
Congratulations to all the team members who gave their all against the much larger high schools, punching way above their weight and supporting each other all day on and off the field. To cement a place in a semi-final at an event such as this is an outstanding effort.
Team members Open Girls 2022 Team; Abbie Grant, Imogen Pye, Tara Axtell, Cheyanne Gocott-Robbins, Katlyn Edwards, Isabella Piper, Lily McKinley and Mollie Mckinley.
It was hard to pick a player of the day as all team members put in 100 % today. It was great to see our students engage so enthusiastically in all the touch games on the day.
To cap off a fantastic day congratulations to Imogen Pye, who was selected for the 2022 open girls Western touch team. Imogen will now play in the Western team participating in the CHS championships in Milperra from Tuesday 28 June to Thursday 30 June 2022, Week 10 of this term.
