Food Technology

What an incredible term of learning we have had in Technology - Food, Textiles and Agriculture! Students are to be congratulated on producing amazing products from Teddy Bears to Club sandwiches and hand apple pies!

Foundation and Year 1 Food Technology

Over the last few weeks students in Foundation and Year One have been developing their knowledge and understanding of the role raising agents in foods that are baked. Students have prepared Zucchini, Cheese and Herb damper, Pizza, and Orange and Cornflake cookies. This week students made Hand apple pies where they were introduced to new equipment and cut their own pastry, and learnt how to seal the edges of pastry and create an aesthetic pattern.

The Foundation and Year One students have approached their learning with such positivity and enthusiasm for learning. Congratulations on an outstanding term of Food Technology!

Year 4/5/6 Food Technology

The Year 4/5/6 students have been looking how to include healthy choices as snacks and using the stove top. After doing a teacher demonstration using the food processor to prepare ingredients, students rolled their own Bliss Balls including date and chocolate flavoured, and apricot balls. Students worked collaboratively to prepare Taco Boats, a healthier choice swapping taco shells with a lettuce leaf. It has been wonderful to see the Year 4/5/6 students embrace change and develop an appreciation of a wide variety of ingredients prepared to enhance the flavour.

Year 7 Food Technology

Students in Year 7 have been developing their skills in making a Roux to make Mac and Cheese. Increasing their precision when using a knife to produce Minestrone soup and garlic bread and, using store bought pastry to make homemade sausage rolls served with a fresh garden salad. Students have excelled this term and produced some incredible dishes whilst working collaboratively with their peers to achieve successful learning outcomes. Well done to all Year 7’s!

Café Culture Food Technology – Elective

Students have continued to shine in Café Culture. They have made their own Beef Burgers served with caramelised onions, individual Egg and Bacon Quiche served with a fresh garden salad, Club sandwiches with a side of sweet potato fries, and Yo-Yo biscuits. Each week they continue to produce marvellous creations – keep up the brilliant work Café Culture students!

Year 2/3 Textiles

The Grade 2/3 students have continued to excel at stitching and decorating their Teddy Bear. They will look forward to sharing their Teddy Bear’s with you in the next edition of Whytalla. Great designing and stitching Grade 2/3’s!

Primary Agriculture

Last week the Year 2/3 students prepared the garden beds ready for planting in their next lesson in the last week of term. The Year 4/5/6 students have continued their investigation into vegetable seedlings to plant in Autumn.

Year 8 Health

In week 8 students investigated the relationship between exercise and short term memory. Students played a game of memory and then participated in exercise. Students were able to then test the effect of physical activity on cognitive health.

VCAL and Breakfast Club News

Over the last few weeks the VCAL students have been providing fresh fruit platters, and fruit to the students for morning fruit time. The fruit platters have been well received by the primary students and staff and a great opportunity for students to refuel whilst they are learning.

Students in VCAL have been learning about FOODBANK and how it enables Edenhope College to provide Breakfast to our students. They have been investigating ways to provide a hot option once a fortnight, particularly as the weather becomes cooler by using school produce and ingredients provided by FOODBANK. The first hot option students chose was pancakes served with poached apples. The VCAL students prepared the poached apples and over 90 pancakes last Thursday and served them at Breakfast Club last Friday.

I would like to thank all our wonderful volunteers who assist with Breakfast Club. Edenhope College is very fortunate to be able to offer Breakfast daily from 8.30 until 8.45am. Students are also able to come along and take a snack for the day which includes, apples, oranges, fruit cups and Messy monkeys.

Please enjoy the photos of the outstanding students learning in the Technology learning area at Edenhope College over the last few weeks of Term 1.

Wishing all families a very safe and happy holiday break.
