Year 7 Boys’ Cricket

The Year 7 boys’ cricket team recently played in the State semi-finals after a very successful term’s cricket.  The boys had won their Northern Peninsula Region Super 8’s final played during Term 1 against local schools.

This term the team defeated:

Mornington Secondary College in the Southern Metropolitan Region (SMR) Quarter Final - 3 for 85 versus 5 for 69 (Sean van Wijk 21, Mitch Jenkins 13no & 2/18, Matt Kennedy 19no, and Jye Dignan 14);

Mordialloc Secondary College in the SMR Semi Final - 2 for 140 versus 7 for 61 (Bailey Bakker 58no, Sean van Wijk 32 & 0/5 off 4 overs, Jye Dignan 2/9, and Jake Simpson 2/13);

Dandenong High School  - 4 for 153 versus 7 for 132 (Sean van Wijk 62no, Matt Kennedy 26 & 2/34, Bailey Bakker 24, Jye Dignan 21, Mitch Jenkins 2/33, and Jake Simpson 1/16) in the SMR Final.

The State Quarter Final was played against Catholic College Sale in Yarragon with Catholic College Sale making 7 for 81 (Mitch Jenkins 2/11, Bailey Bakker 2/14, and Matt Kennedy 1/5 off 4 overs).  The early wickets of Jye Dignan and Sean van Wijk had us 2 for 16 but Bailey Bakker 44no and Matt Kennedy 20 got our score to 3 for 84 in the 17th over!

The State Semi Final was played against Maribyrnong Sports Academy at Oak Park Sports Centre and we struggled to post a competitive total after losing early wickets. We scored 8 for 77 with Bailey Bakker 29 and Mitch Jenkins 16 our best contributors. Early wickets to Mitch Jenkins and Sean van Wijk gave us some chances but then we failed to capitalise by bowling far too short. Maribyrnong steadied and won the game by 7 wickets in the 14th over.

The boys have played some great cricket during the year and they should be very proud with finishing in the Top 4 in the State. A huge thank you to Mr Glenn Davey for helping out with warm ups and scoring during our State games.  Looking forward to playing some more great cricket in 2017!

Year 8 Boys' Cricket

The Year 8 boys’ cricket team were aiming to go one better after finishing State Runners Up in last year’s competition.  They easily accounted for the local schools in the Northern Peninsula Region Super 8’s final played during Term 1.

This term the boys defeated:

Rosebud Secondary College in the Southern Metropolitan Region (SMR) Quarter Final – 4 for 132 versus 5 for 79 (Luke Kranzbuhler 58no, Luke Long 32, Aidan Fulcher 14, Josh Rice 3/8, Nicholas Hammel 1/2, Jonah Avery 1/6);

Parkdale Secondary College in the SMR Semi Final - 3 for 118 versus 8 for 112 (Luke Kranzbuhler 47, Jonah Avery 42 & 1/22, Aidan Fulcher 2/16, Jai Block 1/3, and Sam Webster 1/15);

Koo Wee Rup Secondary College – 0 for 83 versus 10 for 82 (Luke Long 52no, Brodie Scully 21no, Flynn Sinclair 4/15, Josh Rice 2/3, and Jai Block 2/13) in the SMR Final.

The State Quarter Final was played against Sale College in Yarragon with Frankston making 3 for 132 (Luke Long 35, Brodie Scully 28, Aidan Fulcher 20no, Luke Kranzbuhler 18, Jai Block 15no). In reply, Sale College made a flying start but then lost wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for 89 (Jobe Gardner 2/6, Josh Rice 1/7, Flynn Sinclair 1/7, and Jai Block 1/7).

The State Semi Final was played at Macleay Park in Balwyn against Maribyrnong Sports Academy, the team we had beaten in last year’s finals.  After a promising start we lost wickets in quick succession and along with some interesting umpiring decisions, didn’t take advantage of our great start.  After our 20 overs we finished with 8 for 95 (Luke Kranzbuhler 31, Jonah Avery 12, Sam Webster 11, Luke Long 10, and Josh Rice 10no).

An early wicket to Captain Luke Kranzbuhler gave us just the start we needed but missed opportunities saw our opponents steadily build their score.  Kranzy snared another wicket in the 5th over and Jai Block claimed a wicket in each of his first 2 overs!  Our opponents were now 4 for 57 but we needed to maintain the pressure.  A run out followed by a valuable 22 run partnership got them to within 10 runs of the target which they then reached in the 18th over to win the game.

A heart breaking end to the season as Maribyrnong went on to win the State Final! After such a run of comprehensive victories the boys know they have let a State Championship slip through their fingers! I would like to sincerely thank Mr Chris Sutcliffe and Mr Stuart Kranzbuhler who were able to coach the team while I attended the Year 7 games – SSV in their wisdom deciding to schedule a number of the finals this term on the same day but at different venues!
