October 2022
A big congratulations to all of the 2023 Hands on Learning groups on completing our first build for the year. We were tasked with constructing seven small Picnic Tables for distribution and use at Northern Bay Early Learning Centre, 3-year-old Kindergarten, 4-year-old Kindergarten and the Family centre.
All participants can be proud of their individual effort and displays of teamwork throughout this project. Keeping in mind, at the time of completion, that the 2023 Hands on Learning program has only been operating for two weeks.
This is an outstanding achievement by all students involved. Well done.

EXTENDED SCHOOL DAY
This week saw us begin our Term 1 program. With 300 students over the three days it has been an exciting start to the term. From cooking to circus skills, yoga, tennis, dancing and many more, Term 1 is packed with lots of new programs.
A reminder that the program finishes at 4:45 and pick up is in Indiana Ave. Parking is always difficult so please consider parking in Goldsworthy Road and walking a little further, especially when it is dry. Your young ones are especially happy to see you after their activity and in their excitement the narrow street and illegally parked vehicles cause us great concern.
You will find more information on the Extended School Day website: https://xtraschoolprogram.weebly.com/
This year our students are very lucky to be able to have Performing Arts and Visual Arts for a full year (2022 there was a semester of each) The year has started off well, with students settling in and learning about the beat and the colour wheels.
With the introduction of our classes came with us some new teachers.
PERFORMING ARTS:
Rochelle Barnett is at Hendy and Peacock Campus teaching our Year 5-8's. Mrs Barnett is no stranger to Northern Bay having worked at Peacock for a few years now
Colette Brennan is at Wexford Campus teaching P-6. Ms Brennan came from Hendy Campus where she was most recently a Year 7/8 classroom teacher.
Maria Korolis is at Peacock and Hendy teaching Prep - Yr 4 and has been a member of the Performing Arts team for a number of years.
Miriam Kenter is at Tallis Campus teaching our P-6's. Ms Kenter came to Tallis last year and is passionate about the arts.
VISUAL ARTS:
Mr Phill Mullaly and
Ms Emily Millman love visual arts and know our students well. They will be in the Art room teaching at Wexford and Tallis P-8 rooms.
Ms Carrie Tinning has joined us at Hendy Campus teaching the P-6's. Ms Tinning would be well known across our campuses and this year is stepping into the Arts at Hendy Campus and is loving being able to share her artistic skills with the students and facilitate their own development..
Ms Cat Miller is new to Northern Bay and is teaching the P-6's at Peacock Campus. Ms Miller is new to the Northern Bay community and the students and colleagues have made her very welcome. Of course, she is loving working with our students.
In Dance we did a dance to "fight song" which is a slower song but there was a lot to it and it was really hard but it was really fun.
We also did a mirror game where we did a move and our partner had to copy that move and make up a new one. We also did a different game where we had to go in a circle and do a move then the next person did that move then a new one then it kept going around.
I really enjoyed learning a new dance and trying something new

Today we were working on shading and creases in clothes and colouring in our old or a new piece we draw last week or today because next week we are doing our final good copy that is going to be framed. So, I'm bring my good markers for my friends and I to use :).
I really liked today because Emily taught how to draw ‘chubby’ people and how to draw clothes on them plus I realised that I'm good at shading so that's a plus for next week. everyone (Mrs Baulch, Emily and scope of my friends) seemed to like that piece so I’ll be doing something similar next week. – Dream, Year 7&8 IMPACT
Our IMPACT students in year 9 have started the year off developing their drawing skills with local artist Emily Rastas. They have been exploring different mediums and blending techniques. learning how to draw a variety of characters. The Year 9's are also working on an old fashion radio show and have been working with a local author and learning about life in a radio station. in the next newsletter we will have some feedback of their visit to KROCK studio in the city .
If you click on the drawings above it enlarges them and you get a better idea of the intricate skills that these young people display. This is really good work from students who envisage the arts as a possible pathway and have therefore selected IMPACT as an elective.
The content for IMPACT classes is driven by students own interests and the feedback of which area of the arts they want to experience each term. In 2022 this cohort had studied with puppetry, radio / sound effects and arrange of material arts and this year they wanted to look at music. With no experience of the instrument they selected for the term we recently had the first ensemble piece where they all played together. We may even make a short clip for the next news letter!
My first week went really well, being the only one who hadn't been there before i caught on extremely quickly and when I got on the drums it was great. I learnt "Lean on me" quickly and how to read drumming music and what different symbols meant plus where to place my hands when drumming. I don't think id do drumming professionally but i enjoy it a lot and I want to learn more. - Macca
From the previous lessons, I have learned many different songs on the piano. The song ‘Lean on me’ I have nearly perfected through many attempts. There is a new song I love practising which was ‘mountain of the king. The melody is quite elegant and easy at the start. I’m having fun playing the piano and the songs I play. - Julia

The SEED program and the ASCEND SEED 7 / 8 elective are in full swing again this year and our summer sports have been successful in Cricket and very promising in Athletics.
Our Boys and Girls Cricketers have been winners in the 2 local competitions and now move forward to the next grouping of schools. Like most teams we have stars who were terrific on the day - but Northern Bay SEED wants to be known as a team - collaborative, kind, persistent and of course growing with every game. Congratulations to both teams.
You will recall that the teams' tops were purchased with a Grant from the Lord Taverners - Geelong's own Cricket lovers - and bears their logo. We also have to do them proud!.
Upskilling!
We try to provide our Year 9 and 10 students who have chosen SEED as their elective to have experiences across all sports. Ideally we hope to built a lifelong connection to sport and encourage our Northern Bay students to pursue further study and / or join local sporting clubs. This term the options are NETBALL, BASKETBALL, SOCCER, BADMINTON, VOLLEYBALL and CRICKET.
Sport at Northern Bay College take the form of SEED - Sports Empowerment, Education and Development. Our program began 5 years ago and is now the envy of many Geelong schools. A major strategy is to work with coaches in the various sports we find around Geelong. People don't really enjoy sport when they are not good at it it - so we learn with and from the best to encourage enjoyment as well as development and success. Term one has an athletics focus with all year 7 and 8 joining at the Goldsworthy reserve and rotating through sports that will be offered on the 7-12 Athletic Carnival Day on April 6.
With the training each Friday during SEED we hope that the group will be more confident and take part in races and field events as members of their school House
Freeman - Irwin - Mabo - and Bradman
This elective for students who have expressed an interest in developing some form of pathway in the sports industry or playing a sport has had a great start to the year. They have commenced doing their fitness assessments and recovery sessions as well as joining the Year 9 and 10 SEED Squad who are working with their specialist coaches, if they are on site at Goldsworthy or at an external sports venue.
Once completed the students complete their Journals discussing their day and complete the entry in their specialised workbook on the topic covered during each session. In the next newsletter students will share their reflections on their day at The MCG.
Finally we are calling on all students for secondary school years to join with us at Goldsworthy for Track Club. Here we use trainers and senior students to build running skills. It is student led and they are the ones who are committed to early morning training. It is terrific to see their dedication.
Enthusiastic Year 7 and 8 students may have an opportunity to join the Club next term. Watch this space
