Year 3 - 6 Community

March 2023

It is important, in each of the stages of schooling, to know what our students are thinking, feeling and learning.

Across the campuses we asked for an insight into the daiily activities of the children from years 3 to 6. One large body of work which all students have or will undertake is a session with Project Rockit. The response and insight from the students warrants a whole page of its own - especially since this are of student safety is of concern for schools and parents. Please make sue you read the Project Rocket page after these stories form Years 3 to 6.

Organisation and communication.

In 5/6 we have been working with our teachers to develop a Communication Board for our class. This board helps us stay organised and includes things such as; weekly timetable, focus student rosters, Acknowledgement of Country, College values, School Wide Positive

Behaviours and much more.

In 3/4s we have been talking about how we can be problem solvers and how to identify which problems we can solve ourselves and which ones we might need to ask for help with.

We have also talked a lot about how

our reactions and how they can match

the size of the problem.

Emotions

The start of the school year often has mixed emotions. Mostly we all are happy back at school and we had a great session as part of the Starting Right program on how we show emotion.

Can you guess how these students are feeling?

Cubes

Have you heard your children talking about CUBES.?  Well Guntaas and Neveah can tell us about the strategy

What is cubes?

Cubes is a mathematical strategy to help solve worded problems. The class has been using this strategy to help them solve the worded problems they have been given.

What does cubes stand for ?

The ‘c’ in cubes is  to circle the important numbers.

The ‘u’ in cubes stands for underlining the key question.

The ‘b’ in cubes is to box the key words.

The ‘e’ in cubes stands for evaluate the steps to take.

The ‘s’ in cubes stand for solve and check.

We have used CUBES to support us when looking at worded problems.

Chromebooks

Chromebooks are such an important learning tool in the 3-6 community. Our year 3’s were very excited to be given their Chromebooks this year.  Some of the Hendy and Wexford Year 3 students wanted to share their early thoughts.

  • I use my Chrome Book in a calm, quiet space where I am not interrupted. I like using my Chrome Book because I don’t have to do my work on the paper.  Steele,
  • I make sure I use my Chrome Book safely by leaving it in a case when I am not using it, and carrying it in my school bag. In the classroom I hold it safely with two hands. Ayla,
  • I make sure I am safe online and don’t do anything inappropriate. I can use Essential Assessment to see how I am going with my learning, then practice my skills on My Numeracy. Breiah,
  • I found out how to change my background. I like looking at images. Kaleah C
  • I like communicating with my teacher on Google Classroom. Spencer O
  • I like to change my background. There are all different art backgrounds. Leeroy SD
  • I can learn on my Chromebook. I have learnt how to use Google Classroom. Savannah A

and after a year, Sam in Year 4 says

I know how to bookmark websites on my Chrome Book so that I don’t need to search for them all the time. I’m very confident at using Google Slides to show my learning.

Ariyana and Allora talk maths

For maths we worked in groups of 4 to make a shape out of a piece of string that was tied together. We had to follow 4 rules.

1. Everyone in the group must have at least one hand on the string at all times.

2. You cannot untie the string.

3. You must use all of the string for each shape.

4. Convince the teacher that your shape is accurate.

We convinced Mrs Rowe and our class that the shape was what we said it was. We made a square. We said that all the  4 sides were straight and the same length, it had 90’ angles on the corners and it was 2 dimensional.

One group tried to convince Mr McCredden that they had made a square. He was hard to convince and asked lots of questions!

We all enjoyed the activity because it was good fun. It was lucky we chose a square as a star would have been really hard but perhaps next time we will give it a try.

Over at Peacock - Justin's team did try to make a Star

We were challenged to show teamwork and persistence to make different shapes out of string.

Everybody had to have one or two hands on the string. Here is a picture of us making a star, it was very challenging but we talked a lot about the best way to make it work.

We felt successful once we finished.

Tutor Learning Initiative

The tutor learning initiative is such a great opportunity for our students to work in small groups to receive extra instruction. This group is working on improving their writing skills.

BUS PARKING ZONES

Each Campus has a Bus Parking Zone which is repeatedly being used by families for pick-up. Our buses deliver and collect students from and to programs and need to use the space for speedy in / out. Parking at bell times is never good, but please be considerate if you think just a quick stop will be OK.
