Year 7 - 9 Community

March 2023

One of the most exciting times in the school journey are in the 7 to 9 stage. For Year 7, they embark upon about the secondary school curriculum with new subjects and programs.  In Year 8, students should be showing their finest attributes as the senior students in the setting where most began Prep and for Year 9, the reality of approaching the final years of study should set in. They face the challenge and the excitement of the transition to the Goldsworthy Campus and take steps towards a pathway which should focus on their strengths and finding direction in what they hope to study.

For Years 7 and 8 there is a greater emphasis on Collaboration between the Campus groups and three significant activities take place.

Firstly there is the secondary specialist program which is hosted at the GITTC (Geelong Industry Trade Training Centre) Working in mini schools (Tallis / Wexford and Hendy / Peacock) students are offered rotations in specialist areas - Wood Technology, Food Studies, Media,  Visual Communication, Digital Technology and Materials & Textiles.

In Wood, we have been learning how to cut shapes out of the wood using a coping saw and then designing some patterns using the hot wire engraver

In Media we read a story and had to then work out a story board to try to depict the events of the story. I have really enjoyed doing this on Fridays.

Sorry that the story board on my picture is not clear - the small one on the left is a bit better!

Sport is a major focus of school education and at Northern Bay in Years 7 and 8, students undertake the SEED program which is an innovative approach to skill acquisition, enjoyment and character development.  All students rotate through sports which take place at Goldsworthy or at Specialist centres such as Norlane. Each sport has a coach specialist as well as college staff to enhance skills. This term athletics has been the area of study in order to better prepare students for the athletics carnival at the end of term and possible qualification for District, Regional or State competitions.

The final secondary curriculum introduction is electives. Students have been given the opportunity to begin a pathway in a subject which they have both skill and passion .

Ascend 7 / 8 - is the Program and has two pillars currently - sport and health called SEED and the arts - called IMPACT. These programs operate by semester and provide students with additional insight and coaching in different aspects of sport or the arts.

Check out the Programs Page for further insight.

Let us read the thoughts of the students:

Life in Year 7.

Grace and Mason from Peacock have shared some thoughts on their start to Year 7:

A highlight has been our positive start in Math Pathways. We are learning and implementing a growth mindset towards Maths.

We have been able to have a fantastic start to SEED Sport. We were challenged Friday with extreme heat yet everyone persisted and continued to try new athletic sports.

We have also shown a growth mindset towards GITTC by accepting which group we were selected into and giving everything a go.

In English students have had a fantastic start to the year by finishing our cold writes and reading our class novel. We are now collaborating with our peers and talking through discussions surrounding the novel.

A challenge has also been for year 7’s coming into year 7-8 which can be daunting yet we are continuing to make new friends and meet new people at school settings such as SEED, IMPACT and GITTC.

Here are some further thoughts from Peacock students Samantha, Deekon and Leo:

  • There’s lots more work and it is harder than Year 6
  • More fun programs like with GITTC, IMPACT and SEED
  • Maths Pathways is a highlight because I get to choose and it’s at my level
  • Remembering new things is a challenge

Year 9 Mentor Leaders

As part of the continuing development of emerging leaders at Goldsworthy, 10 new mentor leaders have been chosen for year 9. Students self-nominated and two students were selected from each mentor group/homegroup, through a combination of peer and teacher discussions.  This group has a wonderful mix of experienced leaders who have undertaken leadership roles in their P-8 Campuses willing to continue their learning and development alongside first time nominees who have recognised in themselves a willingness to begin a leadership journey. Congratulations to them all.

These students will now get to work with Mr Bayard and their mentor teachers to help plan the mentor program for year 9, deliver our School-Wide Positive Behaviour celebrations such as student of the month and be a voice for students about the year 9 program!

For the rest of term one, this group will also be drilling down into what deep learning really means and looks like in our learning community.

Congratulations to all of our new leaders!

In Years 7 and 8 the College is delighted to announce the Teams of students who will be the P-8 Campus Leaders for 2023.  Please look at the Leaders page for a full list from each campus.

BUS PARKING ZONES

Each Campus has a Bus Parking Zone which is repeatedly being used by families for pick-up. Our buses deliver and collect students from and to programs and need to use the space for speedy in / out. Parking at bell times is never good, but please be considerate if you think just a quick stop will be OK.
