Our talented students!

To Ms Parcell

Hi Its Alisha. It has been a while but I thought I would let you know how things are going. I love it where I am! I have connected with every child at the Centre already. The staff is amazing - so loving and nice to me. Most of them don't have much English so I get to teach the teachers! hahaha. I have been on 2 excursions to a farm and it has been a lot of fun and I am not leaving tis centre for a long long time! Thank you so much - I would not be where I am now it wasn't for your you. One of these days I will come and see you and thank the teachers that got me here too.

Alisha

Alisha was a Yr 11 student in 2022 who was determined to leave school ASAP.  I worked with her and her parents extensively with the promise that we would support her leaving when full time work was secured.   It was, at a brand new child care centre predominantly for Chinese pre-school aged children.

FIRST NATIONS PATHWAY REPORT

by Audra Czyzewski

Education Support Worker: Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Program

On Friday, 24 February, the college held a Pathways Session for our First Nations students in Years 7 - 12 in the Goldsworthy campus library.  The students were joined by honoured guests: Aunty May Owen, Chairperson of the Local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group; Ilona Sliwa, Koorie Education Coordinator for the Department of Education; and Koorie Education Support Officers (KESOs): Richard Fry, Sarah Upton and Shantelle Lucas-Baillie.

Four guest speakers presented to the group.

  • Desirae Kilduff, the Victorian Koorie Student of Year 2022 and Maxima’s Indigenous Employment Program Manager for SA / Vic & Tas, Webexed in to talk about her journey and TAFE qualifications.  She also spoke about what Maxima can offer First Nations students and school leavers in the way of Student based Apprenticeships/Traineeships or full time Apprenticeships/Traineeships.
  • Next, Joz Hazelton, an Employment Mentor from Worn Gundidj, spoke of his journey and trouble at school which led him to leave early by transitioning into a full time apprenticeship with his local Aboriginal landcare organisation.  Joz also spoke of the support he is able to offer students and their families through his current role.  He was happy to answer questions and engrossed the audience as he spoke.
  • Two Koorie Student Support Officers from the Gordon, Tiff Boots and Ethan Liddle, followed to speak about the support available to First Nations students at the Gordon.  They also spoke about some of the specific courses run for Indigenous Australians.
  • Northern Bay P - 12 College Careers Manager and Practitioner, Jo Parcell, rounded out the session with a great activity.  She challenged the group to name jobs or careers for every letter of the alphabet. The students and adults in the room had a great time working together to complete the entire alphabet!  Some of the responses warranted huge applause from the participants.  Such as when Uncle Richard said “Koorie Liaison” for a career starting with ‘K’! The wonderful engagement and behaviour of the students was commended at the close of the session

The Northern Bay Alumni

A Mayor, a curator of the Botanic Gardens and a Doctor in Philosophy…

All alumni from our Northern Bay College, and foundation school networks, that we have spoken to in the first few weeks, it’s going to be a great year!

We are excited to be back in 2023, enjoying the momentum from last year, and the awareness in our school community of our program.

There is a lot to be proud of, and to celebrate in our alumni community. The alumni we chat to have all been hard working, inspirational and have gone on to achieve great things, and we are looking forward to all the opportunities to bring in alumni into Northern Bay to enrich the school curriculum this year. - see photos on the Alumni Page

Alumni Events Term 1:

Study Tips Session

We started the year with a session to our Year 12’s on study tips. The session included our guest speakers Jessie Blackney (2020) and Samson Gatwech (2022) who spoke about their time in Year 12.

Their time at school is still fresh, and the students were able to hear Jessie and Samson’s tips, strategies, and ideas, for getting the most out of senior year, and how to best juggle study, a social life and work.

We are excited for our Year 12’s, and the year ahead, and can’t wait to meet them as alumni on the other side.

VM career planning – alumni guests.

Our VM students are getting ready for their year, and thinking about careers, and we loved having Tony Harvey, Shae Charlton and Sarah McNiven return to school and speak to the students about their career paths.

Our guests’ industries were quite broad: farming, interior design and marketing, and their pathways into their roles were all different, but all interesting.

Being able to ask questions, and hear first-hand, how to navigate life post-school and into a career is  invaluable our students.

We are always growing our network:

We love to hear from alumni. If you attended Northern Bay College, Norlane High, Corio Tech, Corio Community College or Corio Senior College and would like to be involved, please drop us a line at alumni@nbc.vic.edu.au
