Learning and Teaching

ANOTHER EXCITING YEAR OF LEARNING BEGINS…

Welcome back to what I am sure will be another exciting year of learning and teaching at SFS in 2023!

It was so wonderful to see so many parents and carers face to face once again this week, as they attended the Junior and Senior school Parent Information Evening. A lot of information was shared and we hope that this was helpful for parents. In particular, we hope it gave you an insight into the learning and teaching framework in place at SFS and the curriculum areas covered. If you have any further questions regarding any of the information shared or learning and teaching please feel free to see your child’s home group teacher throughout the year or email me at jforbes@sfslynbrook.catholic.edu.au

JUNIOR SCHOOL – BEGINNING OF THE YEAR ASSESSMENTS

As we commenced our second week of learning at SFS this week it was great to walk around and see the children settled and getting back into the daily routines in their Learning Spaces. The beginning of the year is always such an exciting time, particularly for our Foundation students as they begin their school journey.

As mentioned at the Information Evening, over the next few weeks teachers in the Junior School will undertake formal school based assessments in English and Mathematics with our Foundation students as well as Reading Assessments with students in Years 1 & 2.

These assessments take place at the beginning of the school year in all Victorian Schools and are set by the Department of Education and MACS. The tasks for each assessment are conducted in the form of a one on one interview by the teacher with the student. It is also a great opportunity for teachers to meet with children individually. The assessments are comprised of a series of Literacy and Numeracy based tasks which seek to provide teachers with information about their students that will inform their teaching and learning programs for this semester. There is no need for children to prepare for these assessments and while formal in terms of school data collection, they are conducted in a manner which is very informal so that children feel relaxed and at ease.

Ongoing assessments continue to take place in all curriculum areas throughout the year as students are introduced to different concepts, skills and units of work and this information is used for reporting purposes throughout the year.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me or ask your child’s teacher.

In the meantime enjoy the remainder of this term and please have a look in the Learning and Teaching section of the newsletter each week as we share children’s learning and any other relevant information for parents and carers.

Thanks again

SPORTS NEWS

FRIDAY SENIOR SPORTS

Congratulations to the Senior Students on a great start to Sports participation.

This week they played Volleystars which is a sport of the Summer Interschool Sport Competition.  On such a hot day, the students showed great PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning) to each other and their teachers.

TWILIGHT SPORTS

Please mark Thursday March 9th (5.30 pm  – 8.00 pm) into your diaries. This is the date for our Twilight House Sports this year.

Which House will win our Twilight Sports this year?

Which House will win the Spirit Award.

Students will soon begin to meet in their Houses to practise their cheering.

Don’t forget for the sports night your child will need to wear a t-shirt the colour of their House and their sports shorts, skirts or tracksuit and runners:

MacKillop         yellow

Patrick               green

Bosco                red

Teresa               blue

Foundation parents and any parents of new students, you will shortly be notified of your child’s House so you can organise a coloured t-shirt. If you have an older child, your younger child will be in the same House.

SFS CROSS COUNTRY

On the last day of term, which will be Thursday 6th April, the whole school will be involved in our traditional Cross Country run which will be held here at school. We will be looking for the winning House as well as the winners for each level in the Juniors and age group in the Seniors. We will also be identifying Senior students who will qualify to attend District Cross Country in Term 2.
