Year Four

Dear Year Four Families,

The Year Four students have officially concluded their First 20 Days Program and with much excitement, we have commenced our first unit of inquiry of 'Who we are' following our central idea 'A nation’s story has different perspectives'. The year four students have come up with wonderings such as 'why do nations have different perspectives?' and 'what is considered a nation?'.

Lines of inquiry:

  •  Indigenous Culture
  • The perspective of identity
  • The many different viewpoints of  integration of different cultures.

Writing

During writing sessions, The Year Fours have analysed mentor text 'My place'  written by Nadia Wheatley. Students analysed the text by understanding the history of Australia, families, settlers, multiculturalism, and the traditional owners of the land. From this they created a seed to spark a writing idea where they later created their own poem using the same structure from the text. In week 6 we will continue to dive deeper into poetic devices and how to keep the reader engaged by using figurative language.

Reading

We have started our investigation into how a reader's perspective is influenced by third-person point of view while reading. Reading the text "The Lost Girl," the Year Fours delved more into the idea of initial encounter between indigenous Australians and the first settlers. From there, students responded to a variety of comprehension questions to determine how well they understood the text.

Mathematics

Maths fluid groupings have commenced, this term the Year Four students are diving deeper into whole number and place value. Students have found these groups beneficial to their learning and are enjoying learning skills targeted specifically for them. They have taken the opportunity to be open-minded, reflective and show how they can be thinkers when approached with a challenging question. When students are not in their fluid groups they have continued working through the goal setting process. This allows students to be inquirers and focus on a goal that suits them best.
