Year Two

Dear Year Two Community,

The Year Two students have successfully completed their First 20 Days Program. During this time, we have commenced our first unit of inquiry of 'Who we are' following our central idea 'Our lifestyle choices influence our health'.

Reading

In Reading, students practised their independent reading skills based on their reading interests. Students learnt that print and illustrations convey a message, as well as the difference between words and letters. Students used the 'Good Readers' decoding strategies to learn how to self-correct if their reading didn't look/sound right or make sense. Finally, students played an engaging game to do with the process of selecting books for enjoyment.

Writing

In Writing, students learnt to use descriptive words and adjectives to make their writing interesting and fun. Students also completed a pre-assessment for procedural texts under test conditions, which is our new unit in Writing for the remainder of the term. Students also listened to music and wrote how they felt during that piece of music and what things they connected to in the pieces. Finally, students continued to practise their Quick Writes through the prompt "What adventure would you go on in a tropical island?"

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students explored place value through hundreds, tens and ones. Students used prior knowledge of addition and multiplication to critically think about how to approach, dissect and work out worded problems. Finally, students also completed a jigsaw puzzle to do with a 100s chart.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students learnt how to login to apps they will be using throughout the year, gaining independence on these skills. Students also learnt how to be a good friend, as well as how to regulate and balance their emotions through the Zones of Regulation. Finally, students also wrote and presented a speech if they wanted to be part of Junior School Council for 2023.

Homework

Homework will be beginning in Week 6. Homework will be handed their homework on a piece of paper every Monday and should be handed back to the teacher by Friday. Homework is a reflection of their prior learning and is an activity students can access independently as a way of showcasing to parents their current learning. Students work will be either ticked or stamped to acknowledge the continued learning efforts of the child.

Junior School Council

Last week, students had the opportunity to run for Junior School Council. This is a huge responsiblity that has alot of say in the things we do in class and in school as part of the greater Saltwater community. Students went through a vigorous process, writing a speech and interviewing for the role. The Year Two team would like to commend each student who went for the role and took the time and effort to be a risk-taker in their learning. We are proud of announce our four Year Two representatives. For Timetable A, we have Seoha Yoon (2F) and Cruz Gomez (2E), and for Timetable B, we have Mayukha Navuluri (2C) and Israel Tuiatua (2A). Congratulations to those students and all that participated.

Reminders

• In Term Two, it is required that all students wear their hats during recess and lunch. We kindly remind students to remember to pack their hats each day.

• Please ensure iPads are sent to school fully charged each day.

•  Take Home Readers need to be brought into school every day and will be swapped on a Friday.

As previously mentioned, as we move through the year if you ever have any concerns or questions, we encourage you to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher in the first instance. If needed, the teacher can direct your queries to a member of the leadership team who will be able to assist you.

Kind Regards,

The Year Two Team.
