An Inquiry into ‘Who We Are…

Our first  Unit of Inquiry for the year has had students inquiring into the way changes in their lives help them to become the person they are. They have begun the unit by looking into the physical, social and emotional changes that young people experience as they go through puberty. Students were curious about the changes their own bodies go through and empathetic to the changes of all students.

They continue to inquire into the structure of healthy relationships in their life and will be looking at what it takes to maintain different kinds of relationships. They will also be learning about the impact of their emotions on their behaviour, and how it is not emotions that are good or bad, but actions as a result of emotions that can be good or bad.

Students will aspire to reach an enduring understanding that there will be many changes throughout their life, and how they react to those changes will help them to become the person they were meant to be.

Reading Groups

In Reading, students have been working in their assigned fluid group to familiarise themselves with the comprehension strategies. Each group has been working through different focuses such as comprehension strategies, text structure, language features and language conventions. Students are working on their speaking and listening skills when participating in literacy discussion circles and collaborating with their peers.

Mathematics Groups

To begin our maths focus groups for the Year, students completed their Numeracy Essential Assessment to help measure their individual ability within the area of Number and Place Value. After completing the assessment, students were sorted into groups with students of similar ability and assigned a teacher that will support their mathematical needs. All students are excited to be extended from their point of need in their flexible learning groups.

Homework

Students are required to complete set homework tasks each week. These tasks are updated weekly on the homework page, which can be found on each Year Six class page on school box. The aim of the set homework is for the students to be able to continue to consolidate their learning and deepen their understanding. Completing homework will help develop student’s organisation and self management skills and will prepare them for Year Seven.

Beach Program

Our students have been participating in a Beach Safety Program at Williamstown Beach. The students have gained knowledge of how they can keep themselves safe in and around the water, how to use bandages to wrap cuts and stings as well as engaging in fun land and water activities. Each and everyone of them has demonstrated a principled mindset whilst representing Saltwater College in a public forum and interacting with our excellent instructors from the Williamstown Surf Life Saving Club.

Sports

Our Summer Sports Gala Day is fast approaching. Students have shown courage and dedication as they put their names forward to join one of our teams that will represent Saltwater College when we verse other schools in our district on the 29th of March.

Camp

Our students have been so excited talking about our upcoming camp in Term 2. We are very lucky to be heading to Canberra again this year. Camp in Canberra provides students with a range of exciting and educational experiences. Students will have the opportunity to learn and explore outside of the classroom from our visits to Parliament House, the National Electoral Education Centre, Government house and much more. Canberra has something to offer for every type of student and was definitely a highlight of the year for our 2022 cohort. Friendly reminder that our Camp Deposits are due by Friday the 3rd of March.

Kind Regards,

The Year Six Team
