Year Five

Dear Year Five Families,

It has been a wonderful start to the term in Year Five. The students have shown a strong commitment to their classrooms, their school, and their learning. NAPLAN preparations are well under way and the students have shown enthusiasm by being active participants in the classroom. The Year Fives also presented at assembly this week, sharing with the school how they have been preparing for NAPLAN.

Reading

In Reading, students have begun to read and answer various different reading comprehension task cards. Each task card focuses on a different aspect of reading comprehension such as summarising, identifying the main idea, and recognising cause and effect. Students have also been practising with previous NAPLAN reading magazines, so they are used to NAPLAN style questions. Students have been able to use the QAR skills they learnt at the beginning of the year answer the questions to the text.

Writing

In Writing, students have been completing their narratives by following the writing process and using the skills they learnt from the seven steps of success writing model. The students are now moving on to writing a persuasive piece by following the TEEL method. This is an excellent opportunity for students looking to become a JSC representative as they can use their persuasive skills to argue why they should be on the JSC.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, the students have engaged in lessons focusing on Number and Algebra. The students have been spending a lesson each day with a different Year 5 teacher to focus on each specific strand of Number and Algebra, such as number facts, fractions, and decimals. The students will have a full week on each of the three key areas of mathematics to ensure they can answer NAPLAN questions for each mathematical topic.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, the students have now been exposed to various leaders and leadership styles, and have been able to generate their own wondering about our central idea, Characteristics of a leader may determine their legacy. After observing leaders such as Steve Smith and Julia Gilliard, the students will begin an investigation into Australian Prime Ministers. Each student will be given a different Australian Prime Minister to research, so they can share with the class different aspects of that leader, such as how they became a leader and the responsibilities they had.
