As our senior students transition into adulthood, the Year 12 Ball is seen as the pinnacle of the College's social events. On the night, students are expected to put their acquired social skills into practise in the way they present themselves and their interaction with staff and each other.
I am pleased to say that I witnessed this last Friday night and I think all will agree the event was a success. The Year 12 students and invited guests looked splendid in their formal attire and were a real credit to themselves, their families, and the College. This night is always a special one and I, and all staff present, enjoyed it immensely.
My sincere thanks to Mrs Nicola Green, Administration Assistant - ADPs, and Mrs Wiesia Collins, Assistant Deputy Principal - Year 12, for their organisation of the Ball, Year 12 PCG teachers and all staff who attended. I would like to also extend special thanks to our Community Relations team who worked tirelessly on the evening to get photos of the students posted on our social media pages, which you can view HERE.
Starting off high school can be a very anxious time for students. Our Year 7 students have started well and appear to be enjoying the commencement of their high school journey. Last Friday I visited the Year 7s at their swimming trials. I was really impressed as most of the students, irrespective of their swimming ability, were strongly engaged with the trials. I congratulate our Year 7 students on their great start to the year and I wish them well for their Inter-House Beach Carnival next week.
Thank you to the many parents/caregivers who attended of the Years 8 and 9 Parent Information Night. The format of giving parents/caregivers the opportunity to hear from myself and their relevant Assistant Deputy Principal, before meeting individually with their Pastoral Care teacher and attending optional targeted information sessions, appeared to be successful and well received by those in attendance. I would like to extend my thanks to Mrs Wiesia Collins, Assistant Deputy Principal - Year 12, for organising the evening. Thank you also to all the Year 8 and 9 PCG teachers who met with parents/caregivers and to all staff who presented. Next Wednesday we have the Years 10 and 11 evening (with the same format) commencing at 5:00pm.
Yesterday morning we held our Opening School Assembly where new students in Years 8-12, Year 7s and new staff were formally welcomed to the College. The theme of the assembly was acknowledging the High Achievers from the Class of 2022. The large number of students from last year’s Year 12 group acknowledged at the assembly was impressive. Graduate Adam Lewis gave a fantastic short speech on his educational journey and provided tips for all students on how to be successful at school. His speech is available below.
Dr Tony Curry, Acting Deputy Executive Director of CEWA, was a guest at the assembly and assisted with the presentation of awards. Dr Curry took the opportunity to also congratulate the High Achievers, their parents/caregivers and all the SHC staff. Today, we also received correspondence from Dr Wayne Bull, Acting Executive Director of CEWA, congratulating all on the outstanding achievements. Dr Bull’s letter can be read below.
On Monday evening, the Parents and Friends (P&F) will hold a Wine and Cheese Night for its first meeting for the year. The meeting will be held in The Hywood Room commencing at 7:00pm. I strongly encourage parents to be part of the P&F and attend the meeting on Monday. Research shows that students who have parents/caregivers who are involved with their education or involved in their school feel more comfortable at the school and have improved outcomes. Hopefully I have the opportunity to meet many parents at our first meeting on Monday evening.
God Bless.
