Careers Term 2 - 2020

We hope you are going well with online learning but we understand it's very time consuming and exhausting. We believe  you are all getting sick of isolation and being at home constantly.  If you feel lost we are happy to chat on the phone at any time or talk on a webex chat with you and/or your parents, also don’t forget to check out Healesville High Careers if you are unclear of the future.

Year 12

Luckily Ms Shelley chatted to all Year 12’s last term and is going to send out  specific information this term for you to consider options for next year. VTAC put out some information this week. Please read this carefully.

27 APRIL 2020    JOINT NATIONAL STATEMENT ON UNIVERSITY ENTRY FOR 2020 YEAR 12 STUDENTS The disruption caused to 2020 Year 12 students by COVID-19 has led many to question whether entry to university will be different for them compared to previous years. The Australasian Conference of Tertiary Admissions Centres (ACTAC), comprising admissions centres across Australia, has released the following information to help dispel any confusion for students and parents:

  • All tertiary admissions centres, universities, and education authorities are working together to ensure a pathway to university for those currently studying Year 12.
  • Information about the admissions criteria for courses and universities will be available on tertiary admission centre websites by August. This will include final details of any special COVID-19 admission schemes that are offered.
  • While universities have autonomy in their admissions processes and may adopt specific schemes in response to COVID-19, there is already a clear and nationally consistent process for Year 12 students that uses the ATAR as the primary basis of admission.
  • These pathways are in addition to the ATAR; they do not replace the ATAR.
  • As in previous years, other pathways that exist alongside the ATAR can be used by universities. For example:
  • The use of other criteria such as interviews, tests and portfolios for specific courses
    • The consideration of Year 11 results as part of some early offer schemes in NSW, ACT, and Tasmania
    • Special entry schemes for specific groups such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
    • The ATAR is widely used across Australia because it is a fair and nationally consistent tool for university entrance, in terms of both allocating places and predicting readiness for university study. Any changes to a state’s examination and assessment processes in response to COVID-19 can be accommodated within the ATAR framework.
    • The ATAR will be calculated in all states and territories as in previous years.

Year 11

Ms Shelley managed to chat to over half of the Year 11’s  before the break so she is going to chat to the rest of you this term. Ms Shelley will email you a time to chat via webex and hope you can join her for 5-10 minutes, if you’d like your parents present feel free to invite them. As we missed the Careers excursion, many presenters who were to attend the VCE and Careers Expo are having online live VCE workshops so these may help you and Year 12’s. Read below for ideas.

Year 10

We just want to explain that although we have had to cancel Work Experience in 22-26 June 2020 due to COVID 19 disruption, that all being well we are keen for students to complete a week in either September holidays or later in year in December. More information to come.

However in the mean time we are working with a Healesville  community steering group ‘ It takes a Town’ with the Yarra Ranges Council to develop an exciting interactive program around the Experience of Work Project this year.

In the mean time I encourage all students to make the most of their time in isolation and build their resumes that they started in Year 9 on Healesville High Careers. I urge students to watch the movie ‘Pay it forward’ and to think of safe ways they can help both parents at home, grandparents or their neighbours.

Ms O’Brien and I will soon start interviewing all Year 10 students to discuss their current individual Career Action Plans (CAP’s) after their Morrisby Profiles last year commenced this program.
