Captains' Conference

Focusing on achievable ideas

Last Friday, the leaders of Northcote High School came together for our Captains' Conference to discuss a range of different topics and issues within our school and wider community. It was great to be able to connect and share ideas with everyone despite currently working remotely. We began the conference with a formal introduction to our acting principal, Mr Jones and it was great to get to know him a little better. We then had the School Captains from 2020 join us to share their experience being captains, particularly during remote learning, and some tips and inspiration for us. One of the most important takeaways from them was that sometimes it’s more important to focus on smaller more achievable ideas rather than big grand ideas. We were reminded that if we can positively impact one person’s life than we are meeting the expectation of our role as captains. After this, Ms Archibald showed some ideas and examples of possible new outdoor furniture for the school as this was something the captains have been working towards over the year. Following this, leaders split into smaller focus groups to discuss a range of different ideas which we hope to see in the near future.

Last Friday, I met with the other student leaders for our bi-annual captains conference.

Usually, we would meet up and discuss important issues with the teachers, but because of the current lockdown that couldn't happen, so we compromised and met up virtually.

Using Teams we split into smaller rooms, talking about specific issues we were interested in.

The topics we discussed were Start the Conversation, Teams online resources, 2021 student events, and school uniform.

It was very productive, and everyone shared their own unique perspective on these issues after catching up again in a large group to discuss. Ideas included introducing more virtual house competitions, introducing student run clubs to Teams, and getting feedback on the current uniform and uniform policy.

We hope to get some of these ideas rolling in term 4, but until then we hope everyone has a relaxing and well-deserved break!
