Food Studies

Kalam's Lemon chicken with pear and parmesan

Students cooking up a storm at home

Even in lockdown the Food Faculty keeps humming along, getting ready for when we return to school. Parents of year 8 students will be aware that the seeds for growing a food plant have arrived in the mail. We would like to thank Kevin Mulholland for converting some old ball stands we recycled from the PE faculty into planter stands. These will take pride of place outside the Food Studies rooms and will house the plants that return to school with their owners.

Earlier in the semester we looked on as our mural for C7 took place. The fabulous work from the Art club under the direction of Mr. Drinan has been hung and looks fantastic. Once more we would like to thank everyone for their creativity. It really brings colour and vibrancy to our room.

One of the many challenges for remote learning is the completion of practical classes but our students never fail to amaze us. Students from Year 8 to Year 12 have been whipping up a storm in kitchens at home. Year 8s have been preparing foods with a theme of ‘using what’s in the cupboard’ to demonstrate how to minimise food waste and Year 9s have been looking at the influence media food styling has on what they choose to cook at home. We know of one case where a student in year 9 created a dark chocolate cake and was inspired by her family feedback to make another for her grandmother’s birthday. Year 10s have been creating recipes focusing on sustainability within the café industry or on nutritional value. Year 11s have been preparing recipes that reflect a particular food trend within a food industry and Year 12s have been modifying recipes to reflect the recommendations of the Australian Dietary Guidelines.

We are overwhelmed by the support families have provided to enable this to occur. The enthusiasm and engagement students have exhibited in such trying conditions makes the effort all worthwhile. We have received a lot of feedback from families letting us know how appreciative they are of the efforts of their children, and how much they've enjoyed eating the work produced!
