Return to school

As I have reflected this week on the return to school after what is probably the longest break from face-to-face learning most of us in Australian schools have ever experienced (perhaps three times as long as the standard summer holiday break), as often happens, my mind has turned to Scripture to make sense of what we are experiencing in the ‘here and now’. I have found this troubling. Why? Because the story I cannot escape in my musing is the story Jesus told of the Forgiving Father, often known as the story of the Prodigal Son.

The reason I find this troubling is that if the metaphor holds, your boys would be the degenerate, debaucherous younger son, which is clearly not the case! So, if that is not the focus, I have been forced to ask myself, what part of this story is asking me to take notice and learn from it at this time? An obvious answer is (like much of Jesus’ teaching): Look to the Father. In the story as we read it, the forgiving father welcomes his son back just as he is.

Over the last few weeks, I have been lucky and privileged to work with your sons’ teachers in preparation for the return of the boys - just as they are. Happy, nervous, excited, anxious, worried, ambivalent, unfocused, reluctant, keen...just as they are. I vouch for the fact that each Junior School teacher is ready, willing, able, and hoping to welcome each and every boy back into life at the College. There has been so much work behind the scenes to ensure that the needs of each boy are considered and met.

We hope this will be borne out in the experience each boy has of returning to life on campus, but if anything is amiss or you think there is anything we have missed or can do better, I trust you will let me know via 8705 9247 or ben.munday@spc.nsw.edu.au
