From the Assistant Principals

Uniform

Thank you for supporting the school in ensuring your child is in full school uniform. We remind parents that students should be wearing no jewellery aside from a watch and no more than two sets of earrings (studs or sleepers).

NAPLAN 2018

We are very proud of our students’ NAPLAN results. Our results are consistently at or above the state average. More importantly, we have made significant gains in moving students from medium to high growth over the last few years, as can be seen in the tables below. This is testimony to the work of our fantastic teachers, including our English Leader, Justine Douglas, and the Literacy Coordinator, Cristina Presa, who are leading the school in continuing to improve the writing and reading skills of our students through such programs as the Traits of Writing and the reciprocal teaching of reading model.

Mind.Body.Pedal.

We’re excited to announce that Glen Eira College has been selected to take part in the Bicycle Network’s Ride2School initiative, MIND.BODY.PEDAL.

MIND.BODY.PEDAL is a one-day event for our Year 7 Girls that aims to inspire, energise and empower girls to get active through bike riding.  Research tells us that girls are active for less than 30 minutes a day – less than half the 60 minutes of daily exercise recommended for teenagers.  Led by a team of experts, MIND.BODY. PEDAL will set out to support and celebrate the differences that make girls unique while addressing issues of self-esteem and confidence that hold many back from riding a bike.

On the day, MIND.BODY.PEDAL will be broken into four sessions designed to encourage girls to get active through interactive elements.

On the same day, our Year 7 Boys will be focussing on R U OK? Day by thinking about strategies to maintain a health body and mind.

Water Polo

In a first for Glen Eira College, nine boys and six girls represented the school at the recent Victorian Water Polo Secondary Schools Cup, a whole day event that was held last Tuesday at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.  This is another great example of student voice helping drive activities at the school.

This year, in an effort to enhance the access to and participation in secondary schools water polo, Water Polo Victoria and Glen Eira College collaborated with Melbourne High School to bring together students from schools that do not currently have a water polo team.  Our athletes formed a total of four composite teams by combining with similar schools from across Victoria.  Many of our students were complete novices but that did not stop our girls from winning the silver medal on the day.  Congratulations to Bella, Olivia, Lulu, Rusha, Natasha and Lola and all of the boys who played on the day.

Lateness

Glen Eira College is committed to supporting all students to achieve the highest attendance rates. At GEC 'learning starts at 8.55am'.

When students are late to school without a note or a phone call from their parent or guardian, they are required to attend a lunchtime detention on the same day.  If your child is late for any reason, it is best to contact the school office as soon possible.  This can be done by phone (9571 7838) or email (glen.eira.co@edumail.vic.gov.au).
