Robotics Club News

Three teams from the Glen Eira College Robotics Club competed in the RoboCup Junior Victoria state championships at The University of Melbourne on Tuesday 14th August. It was the largest competition ever held in Victoria with 740 students representing 56 schools and clubs across the state. Our teams competed in the Rescue division, but also had opportunities to watch the RoboCup Junior On-Stage performance and Soccer competitions. They performed well under highly competitive conditions, but most importantly they had a day to improve their own robots and learn from those around them. Although there were no trophy winners, everyone gained in fun and experience. Now to prepare for next year!

Digital Technology at GEC

Digital technology is very much a part of our everyday life and will have an even greater impact on our future. We can prepare students for this future by providing opportunities for them to use the equipment of today, but equally importantly by guiding them towards being the creators of the tools of tomorrow.

Last year Glen Eira College was fortunate to receive Digitech Startup Initiative money from the state government and a Maker Space grant from the federal government. This has allowed us to significantly upgrade and add to the digital technology equipment at GEC. Among the purchases were a bank of 3D printers, additional robotic sets, digital design tools and equipment for the creation of electronic gadgets based on programmable Arduino microcontrollers.

The equipment is already being put to good use by students in the Year 12 Visual Communication and Design class, the Year 10 ICT and Robotics class and will be used in the Year 7 Materials class. The additional equipment has also added to the creative opportunities for students who come along to a combined Drones and Engineering Club run weekly at lunchtime. Never mind that it is just FUN!
