Around The Primary

Dear Parents

The celebration of John XXIII is scheduled for next Friday 11 August.  It is one of the special occasions during the year when the entire student body are involved in community celebrations.

The day will begin with a College Mass at 9am in the St Louis Sports Centre.  After the Mass the new ‘Founders’ Playground’ dedicated to our three founders, Pope John XXIII, Ignatius Loyola and Mary Ward will be blessed by Fr Tom Renshaw SJ. The day will then continue with a ‘mini-fete’ organised by our Year 5 and 6 students.  This mini-fete will consist of various games and food novelties.  On this special day our normal nutrition guidelines are relaxed but parents may like to provide  guidelines for their children.

While it is always at a parent’s discretion, we recommend the following guidelines for spending money.

Pre Primary - Year 1     $2.50 (5 x 50 cent coins)      Year 2-6       $5 - $10

All students are required to wear their sports uniform and House shirt for the day and also need to bring a snack for morning tea.

Let’s pray for fine weather on the day and that a magnificent celebratory spirit will be present on John XXIII Day.

This term we are excited to be hosting URSTRONG, an internationally recognized Social Emotional Wellbeing program, that empowers children with the skills, language and self-confidence to be better friends and develop healthier relationships.

URSTRONG will be hosting Language of Friendship (parent-child) workshop at the College on Tuesday, 22 August. Parents can register for the following event:

Language of Friendship (students in Years 3 to 6 plus parents) 22 August from 6pm to 8pm: Click here to register.

In this workshop parents learn strategies to help their child put out ‘friendship fires’, how to put a voice to their children’s feelings, and the best ways to support their child through unhealthy friendships. This workshop gives parents and children a common ‘language’ for talking about friendship and relationships, helping them connect and open up those lines of communication.

We believe that empowering our students with these skills and providing the same tools and language to teachers and parents will create a school community where children are better able to manage their relationships in a safe and respectful environment. I look forward to welcoming families to this workshop.

 Kind regards

Antoinette De Pinto

Head of Primary

Congratulations to all those students who have participated in Round 1 of Word Mania. At this point in time on the Regional Leader Board we are placed:

Well done to those classes who are currently placed in the top 50 on the National Leader Boards:

We look forward to seeing everyone continue to enjoy the competition by participating in Round 2 Aug 7-Aug 11.

Good Luck!

Today, the Year 3’s enjoyed taking on maths challenges through the game ‘Numero’. The presenter, Julie Richards helped expand the students’ knowledge of the game and introduced them to using the ‘wild’ cards. The game has been designed for all ages and abilities and is ideal for developing numeracy concepts and problems solving skills. Our Year 3’s are improving their ability to solve algorithms by developing speed and accuracy when calculating multiplication and division facts. Numero is much more than a card game!
