A Message from David...

2 WEEKS TO GO!!

Tomorrow it will be only 2 weeks until we finally have our Fete! This is set to be such a fun and exciting event for not only the AGPS community but also for the residents of Altona Meadows and the surrounding suburbs. We are hoping for the weather to play nicely (unlike 2018) and we get a huge turnout on the day. This is also a significant fundraiser for our school and all profits go directly to improving the sporting facilities at our school. We would love for you (and everyone you know!!) to come along, join in on the fun and help support our great school.

Volunteers

Thank you to everyone who has supported us in the preparation for the school Fete.  The donations we have received and those that have volunteered their time on the day are greatly appreciated.

An event such as the Fete can only operate with the support and effort of volunteers. We have got a dedicated group of volunteers that have already signed up to help on the day but we still require many more people to volunteer their time. If you or anyone that you know is able to help out on the day, please sign up here:

Junior School Council

This week the JSC has come together to share ideas they have collected from their peers around the school. There are a lot of great ideas that our students have come up with and the JSC has formed three Action Groups to enact three of the ideas given to us.

  • The first project the JSC is working on is the audit of bins around our school and the development of a proposal to get more rubbish bins and also add recycling bins to our school, in an effort to be more mindful of our environment.
  • The second project is something that is sure to get some heads bopping, as we survey students to create a new playlist for our bell music.
  • The final group is working on a school event, which there will be information coming out soon, so watch this space.

As we start our work in the JSC, we always value the input of the school community and if you would like to know more any of our projects, then please get in touch!

Swimming Championships

A big congratulations to three of our students from Altona Green who competed at the Hobsons Bay and Wyndham Division Swimming Championships yesterday.

  • Daniel Hawthorne competed in the 50m backstroke for the 11 year boys.
  • Perryn (12 year girls) finished first in both the 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly events.
  • Harriet (9/10 year girls) finished first in the 50m Butterfly.

Both Harriet and Perryn will head on to the Western Metropolitan Region Swimming Championships to be held at the Aquatic Centre in Geelong later this month. Wishing you the best of luck girls and what an achievement already!

Maths Olympiad & Explorer

Cam has recently started 2 maths focussed clubs that focus on challenging, engaging and exciting students through mathematics. It has been great to see so many students use their lunchtime to participate in these programs.

Explorer

The Maths Explorer is a new initiative from APSMO (Australian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads) and is aimed at students around the Grade 3 area. This is not an extension program and is aimed at students who simply enjoy mathematics and working in groups to solve problems.

The fundamental purpose of the Explorer program is to develop students to be able to:

  • Describe and represent mathematical situations in a variety of ways
  • Select and apply appropriate problem-solving strategies whilst working with a peer(s)
  • Explain their thinking and justify their responses to a variety of problems

We had our first session this week and the students were very eager and participated wonderfully!

Olympiad

The Maths Olympiad has kicked off for another year with an enthusiastic and committed group of young mathematicians.

We have had only two sessions thus far and I have already observed some development in relation to the understanding of key mathematical vocabulary and the ability to represent their thinking in different ways.

This is an extension program and the students are focusing on developing their knowledge to attempt more complex problems as opposed to simply focusing on getting the correct answer

Cam is looking forward to challenging these students throughout the year and celebrating their successes with them.

Attendance

We want all kids to come to school every day. Attending all day, every day helps students build their learning and maintain strong social connections with their friends and teachers. Each lesson provides a foundation for the next one, making it easier to learn the next concept. Every day counts – each day a student misses puts them behind and has flow-on effects:

We understand that there are circumstances where your child cannot attend school but we encourage all parents and carers to prioritise and promote attendance - school is better when your child is here! Please see this article for further information.

Jen Armstead is our school's attendance officer. Her role is to monitor attendance and support families that may be having difficulty getting their child to school. Please contact Jen if you have any questions or concerns about attendance.

Parent Payment Contributions

Thank you to our parents who have already paid the voluntary parent payment contributions for 2022. Your ongoing support ensures that our school can offer the best possible education and support for all our students.

Information about voluntary parent payment contributions can be found below and via the top of your news feed on the Compass app under 'Course Confirmations'.

Our preferred payment option is via Compass or payment can also be made using BPay, Centrepay or EFTPOS. In addition, parents are able to discuss alternative payment arrangements with Tracy Henderson 03 93600777 Tracy.Henderson2@education.vic.gov.au
