News from 5/6 Unit

Hello Families,

The 5/6 Term 1 Inquiry topic is Respectful Relationships, students have been completing tasks recognising their characters strengths and positive attributes they see in others. Friendology is a new program initiated by the Maroondah Council. This is about empowering students with friendship skills with a focus on dealing with conflict resolution.  The program is a skills-based strategy that teaches kid-friendly concepts, skills and language to help them build and maintain healthy friendships.  Students have been learning about the different tools to support, build and strengthen their friendships in and outside the classroom. Ask your child to explain the terms “Friend -O-Meter” and “Friendship Fire” tonight!

In Writing, students have been using their Literacy journals as a way of storing memories, lists, concepts and ideas to assist their writing. These skills are then being applied to narrative writing. Over the next week, students will be developing their own story for their portfolio. The students will follow each step of the writing process to eventually publish their piece of writing.

In Reading, we continue our focus on building comprehension strategies and gaining a deeper understanding of a range of texts. Students will analyse their texts through questioning, summarising and clarifying. Over this week, students will choose their own independent reading goal to focus on. This empowers students to take responsibility for their learning and work towards their goals.

In Numeracy, we will begin a new unit focusing on Measurement. Students will review and apply skills to find area, perimeter, volume and capacity. Students will participate in a range of hands-on learning tasks, which will encourage them to apply skills and solve problems using these skills. Additionally to this, an essential part of success in numeracy is being confident with times tables. Students should be practising these skills each night, with the goal for all sets (2-10) to be recalled with automaticity.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions.

Kind Regards,

Pippa Davis and Nathan Baxter

What’s Happening in 3/4?

We have been going ‘full steam ahead’ in the 3/4 unit this fortnight!

Students have been working hard on refining their addition and subtraction skills – solving equations that involve trading. This was a new concept for some of our students, and for others it was great to re-visit and master this process. Throughout some of the numeracy sessions, students have had the opportunity to participate in ‘Master Classes,’ where they work with different students within the 3/4 unit (and sometimes a different teacher) to access a self-directed level of challenge. The teachers have been very impressed with the maturity and confidence that each child has shown when eagerly searching for their ‘just right’ challenge.

Our writing has seen us re-working an old classic ‘The Gingerbread Man,’ to create our own narratives that involve food. There have been some fantastic concepts coming up in their plans and drafts – we can’t wait for you to read them!

We continue to solidify the students’ understanding of spelling conventions, with students focusing on the ‘Illegal Letters’ and the different vowel sounds.

The first homework for 2022 went home last Tuesday – and is due this Friday – hopefully your child has brought you into their ‘world of learning’ and shared their homework process with you.

Next week we start a new numeracy unit on Measurement and Geometry, continue our work on narrative writing and dive into our learning around Respectful Relationships.

We hope you have a fantastic end of week!

The Adventures of the 1/2's

Hello to all of our Grade 1/2 families!

In Literacy, over the next two weeks, students are continuing to focus on the connections they can make to a particular text. We have been studying ‘Thelma the Unicorn’ and ‘Your Birthday was the Best’, with a focus on vocabulary, activating prior knowledge and sharing the connections we can make to a particular book. It has been wonderful to see the students working hard on improving their writing and always striving to try their best.

In Numeracy, students have been studying data, how to collect it, why it is important and how we can present it in the form of picture graphs. Students have formulated their own questions when surveying the class and it has been exciting converting our information into picture graphs! We have been working hard on developing our knowledge of addition, counting on and solving addition problems. Over the coming weeks we are excited to begin studying subtraction and 2D shapes.

Our Junior School Council votes took place last week, and whilst it was very close and had many candidates, we were pleased to celebrate our elected  Junior School Representatives during last Friday’s assembly. We are all sure they will do an absolute fantastic job in their new roles!

Students continue to take part in the buddy program (Grade One) and Digitech studies ( Grade2 ) once a fortnight, and PMP weekly. We all enjoy these activities and learning about new things such as cyber safety and body coordination.

Our swimming program is taking place soon, in week 8. A reminder to please have students' permission  provided through compass as soon as possible. We can’t wait for the swimming program to start, our students are so excited!

Readers, reading logs and reader bags are now coming home. At the moment the books chosen are based on reading for enjoyment. Please remember to bring your reader bag and readers to school every day.

Have a great week!

Marlborough's Chickens

We are currently collecting both green and blue eggs from our hens.

In most of our cartons of eggs for sale we also have a double yolker!

We currently have 2 dozen eggs to sell at assembly this week at $5 a dozen.

We are also looking for a family to look after our hens during the upcoming school holidays (April 8th to April 26th).

This would entail checking the food and water and collecting the eggs, which you can keep.

We would be able to give you a key and show you where the food is kept on the Friday before the holidays.

If you can help please notify the office.

Thanks,

Anna

Alopecia Awareness Day

On April 7th Michael D will be raising awareness for Alopecia and donating his hair to this amazing cause.

School Contributions for 2022

Using the forms sent home last month you can choose to pay by Credit Card at the office, BPay (details on the form) or Direct into the bank account.  If you pay via BPay or Direct into bank please return the forms (both pages please showing all contributions that you may choose to pay) to the office or scan and email to marlborough.ps@education.vic.gov.au so we are able to reconcile your payment.  You can also pay via Compass.  You can find this in the Payment Centre on the home page.

Please note that you may see in the payment section at the bottom of the page that you have an unallocated funds credit.  This may be because you had a credit from a cancelled excursion or something similar.  If you would like to use this credit, then you need to process this first by removing the amounts prepopulated in the Curriculum Contributions box and just adding the amount of the credit and then clicking on the process button.  The curriculum contributions will then show the amount less the credit applied, and you can continue with your payment.  If you wish to donate the credit amount, then an alternative option is to process your payment first and then add the credit amount to one of the donation areas and processing this. If you require any assistance, please contact the office 9870 3468 or email marlborough.ps@education.vic.gov.au
