Year 5/6        Shrove Tuesday

What is Shrove Tuesday?

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent. On Shrove Tuesday you normally eat pancakes as a last treat before fasting. You are not allowed to eat animal products, you fast for 4o days. The reason you fast is because Jesus fasted in the desert for 40 days with no animal products so we fast to represent Jesus and what he went through and you don’t eat animal products because Jesus didn’t eat any. Shrove Tuesday is a very special day celebrated all around the world.

It's the day before Ash Wednesday.

Lots of people have a big feast and eat milk, meat, eggs and fat on shrove Tuesday! Christians and Catholics like to make pancakes; it's been a tradition!

It's related to lent and the 40 days Jesus had to spend in the desert fasting! By Ria

In Christian traditions, the 40 days before Easter are known as Lent, and they mark the time that Jesus spent fasting in the desert. Traditionally, Christians would mark the period with prayers and fasting, abstaining from a whole range of foods, including meat, eggs, fish, fats and milk. The word ‘shrove’ comes from the old Roman Catholic practice of being ‘shriven’ – meaning to confess one’s sins. The shriving bell would be rung on Shrove Tuesday to call people to church to confess.

Before Lent could begin in earnest, all edible temptations needed to be removed. This took place over a period of days known as ‘Shrovetide’. Meat such as bacon would be eaten up on ‘Collop Monday’ (a collop is a thin slice of meat). And on Shrove Tuesday eggs, butter and stocks of fat would be used up. One of the easiest ways to dispose of these items was to turn them into pancakes or fritters, a custom which continued long after the Church of England separated from the Roman Catholic Church in the 16th century. QUESTION ~ Who wants Mould? ANSWER ~ We do!

Sterilising our glass jars for the chutney led us to think about Mould and how it grows. So we set an experiment up to see how quickly we could grow it. Then we HYPOTHESISED...

using your information, what do you predict will happen. Here's a few thoughts from some budding scientists....

Year 2/3/4

Celebrating Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday

This week in the middle area, the Year 2s and Year 3/4s learnt about the significance of Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. We learnt that Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday when Lent begins. The reason we eat pancakes is because, in the past, Christians would give up all ‘rich’ food like eggs, fats and milk products.

The pancakes from Shrove Tuesday were delicious because we could choose to have jam,  butter and/or syrup on our pancakes. I also had pancakes for breakfast. - Katelin

After Shrove Tuesday it is Ash Wednesday and the first day of Lent - Shamus

On Shrove Tuesday when we ate the pancakes, it was like having a little bit of God inside us. - Katalina

Eating the pancakes is a special tradition that has happened for many, many years. - Yianna

I liked the texture of the pancakes. They tasted yummy! - Fortunato

The pancakes tasted really good and they felt good in my stomach. - Jacob

The pancakes tasted sweet and were very light and fluffy. - Roman

We got to go to the church on Ash Wednesday and we got a cross put on our forehead out of ashes. - Raffaele

The ashes used on Ash Wednesday were made out of burnt palm leaves from Palm Sunday the year before. - Allie

Year 1

Wow! What a busy week the Year 1’s have had so far. We have learnt all about Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday this week, we even learnt a song about Lent…I wonder if your child/children remember the words and can show you the actions?

With so much learning taking place this term, it has been great to see the Year 1’s really embracing Show and Tell so far. Show and Tell gives each student the opportunity to share a special toy/object/photo or retell an event that has occurred. It is a great chance for the students to develop their oral language development and their confidence.

Prep

This week in Prep has been a busy one! The Preps have started participating in Sport and Music on Wednesdays, and Show and Tell has also begun!

Amongst those exciting things, the Preps have been learning new letters of the alphabet every day. After learning the letter of the day, we sing a song about that letter, trace the letter and then colour in a picture of something that starts with that letter. After those activities are completed, the students can practice their letters using whiteboards. It has been fantastic to see everyone learning new letters and recognising these around the classroom and school!
