SCHOOL FEES

To assist parents in planning school fees payments we provided School Fees Information which went home with the student's School Report at the end of last year (please see copy below).  Fees and levies can be paid in full or paid over three Terms. School Fees need to be finalised by 26th August 2022

This is a guide only for one child only below:

    Term 2 - Prep to Year 6  $905   (due 27th May)

    Term 3 - Prep to Year 6  $905   (due 26th Aug)

If you have any question please contact Erica at the office

ENROLMENTS FOR 2023

We are currently taking enrolments for next year.  If you have a family member who is scheduled to start next year please fill out an Enrolment Form and return to the school office.

CSEF (Camps, Sports & Excursion Fund) - FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school camps, excursions and sporting activities.  If you hold a valid Centrelink Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card (CRN) you may be eligible for CSEF.  An application form is below, please fill it out and return to the school office by 8th April 2022.

NUMERACY NEWS  -  Mrs Catherine LeHunt

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the classroom teachers for undertaking the beginning of the school year assessments in both Literacy and Numeracy.

The data is being analyzed and students who are in need of additional support are being identified and grouped so that small group targeted teaching can commence in the areas of Numeracy and Literacy as soon as possible.

If your child has been placed on a Personalised Learning Plan, you may have received a copy of it in the last week.  If you have not received a copy and your child is on a PLP, please make contact with your child’s teacher or myself. Please take the time to read through your child’s goals and we look forward to meeting with you later this term for a Program Support Group Meeting. (PSG)

This is an example of how St Mary’s uses a multi-tiered approach when meeting the needs of our students.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to make contact with your child’s teacher or with me.

Here is the answer to the challenge in our last newsletter.

There are at least 35 heads in the farm of either chickens or cows.

Each animal has at least two legs. In other words, there are 35x2=70 legs. The riddle says 94 legs. 94-70 legs is 24.

That is how many legs are left. Cows have four legs and not two.

So we divide the 24 by 2. Is 12 cows. 35 heads -12 cows comes to 23 heads. That must be chickens then

Let's check the answer: 23 chickens times two legs is 46 legs. 12 cows times four legs is 48 legs. 46 + 48 legs = 94 legs. 23 chicken heads and 12 cow heads makes a total of 35 heads.

Ready for another challenge?

Get together and play a game called:

Nim’ ( from NRICH)

  • Start with any number of counters ( or small toys etc)  in any number of piles.
  • 2 players take turns to remove any number of counters from a single pile.
  • The loser is the player who takes the last counter.

This is a game of skill for two players, both players have exactly the same information, chance plays no part, and each game must terminate. There is always a 'winning strategy' and all the moves can be analyzed mathematically. The only advantage that either player can possibly have is to start or to play second. To work out how to win you need to start by analyzing the 'end game', and the losing position to be avoided, and then work back to earlier moves.

Can you find the winning strategies?

A very important part of mathematical learning is metacognitive development ( as Dr. Angela Rogers from The Numeracy Teachers Academy explains: it is thinking about our thinking) or reasoning.  Take the time to discuss the strategies used after playing the game with your child/ren.  Provide opportunities for them to problem solve and then explain to someone else the winning strategy.

Some of the Mathematical vocabulary that students at St Mary’s use in their learning:

Number line:  a number line can be explained as a straight line with numbers placed at equal intervals along its length.  A number line is usually represented horizontally.

Jump strategy:  involves putting the smaller number at the beginning of a number line, then jumping up to the larger number.

Split strategy:  An example, using the split strategy to add 46 + 23, you would: split each number (decompose) into tens and ones: 46 + 23 = 40 + 6 + 20 + 3. rearrange the tens and ones: 40 + 20 + 6 + 3. add the tens and then the ones 60 + 9 = 69.

Decuple:   A tenfold amount or number. ‘A ten’s number’

Partitioning: is a way of splitting numbers into smaller parts to make them easier to work with.

Have fun with Mathematics,

ITALIAN - Year 3 - Mrs Carmela Vozzo

During Italian this week, Year 3s focused on learning the names of the fruits and their colours through reading aloud and scaffolding the book titled “Mangio un arcobaleno.” Orally, they expressed their favourite fruit and then listened to a song called “La Macedonia” and sang along with it. Great fun!

ST MARY’S SPORTS CARNIVAL  -  Mrs Chris Kidman (P.E. teacher)

St Mary’s Sports Carnival will be held at Alma Park on Thursday 31st March 2022 at 12.30pm.  Students are to wear their Sport Uniform and house colour T-Shirt with a safety pin attached for ribbons.  Parents, friends and family are welcome to attend and watch from behind the fence.  You may like to bring a picnic lunch to have whilst you watch. House colours are Red, Blue, Green and Yellow.  Ask your child what team they are in.
