ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS REPORT

Ben Hawthorn

It has been a short but action packed week here at East!

On Wednesday, our Grade 3 and 5 students took part in their first practice test for this year’s NAPLAN, which we will be conducting online for the first time. The objective of this test session was to check that we had suitable hardware and reliable internet connection to conduct NAPLAN online, while giving students a small taste of the new platform. The assessment went well and gave teachers and students a better understanding of what the online tests will look like when we complete the NAPLAN in Term 2. Our Grade 5 students will also take part in a state-wide coordinated practice test for writing next Thursday at 11am.

This morning at assembly, we promoted next Friday’s Ride2School Day with our inaugural Staff Vs Students scooter race. Miss Sim, Mitch and our late replacement Archie, took on our house leaders in a race for the ages. Utilising our world class running track, competitors raced for the entirety of the assembly with teams accruing laps to find our winner. In a close fought battle full of intensity, it was the staff who took the honours, taking home the golden handlebars. There were plenty of red faces by the end of the race with each competitor averaging over 16 laps of our track, which is well over 6km.

As I’ve mentioned, next Friday is our annual Ride2School Day and boy do we have a great day planned. We will kick of the day from 8.15am with a healthy breakfast of fruit, pancakes, toast and yogurt. Each level will conduct their own parades and ride of the track throughout the day with prizes for the best decorated bikes. Every student that rides will go into the draw for a major prize which will be drawn on the day. For any students that can’t ride to school, walking to school from home or a designated drop off point will also get them into the draw to win. The safety of our students is paramount so please ensure that all students riding anything with wheels have a well fitted helmet.

Today was also the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence with a theme of Kindness Culture. Miss Chalmers addressed assembly and talked about building a Kindness Culture together, and how by doing this we can promote inclusion, respect and community belonging for all students in our school. Students wore orange to support the day and raised money that will be donated to the Doing it for Dolly Foundation.

This week I was lucky enough to sit down with crossing attendants Daryl and Mick. Both were full of praise for our Easties, describing them as respectful and courteous young people. Daryl and Mick did have some safety concerns however and asked me to share them with our community. Both attendants are worried about students and parents that are not using the crossing and believe this could lead to a tragic accident if it continues. Another serious concern they have, which is something I also witness on a daily basis, are cars doing U-turns at the front of the school on Eyre St. Please remember that U-turns are not permitted on Eyre St at the front of the school.

The show roles on next week with Young Leaders, the 5/6 Tennis Tournament, Ride2School Day and more. How good is it here at East!
