Founders' Day

On Friday 16 September, our staff and student community celebrated our Founder’s Day marking the School’s 33 year anniversary. Gifted with beautiful weather, it was a wonderful celebration that brought students and staff from across the School together. Students participated in a variety of events across the day. Our Chaplain, The Reverend Justine Coverdale launched the day with our online Chapel service. This was followed by the annual Wollaston Dash which saw students from our four Houses in Year 2 -12 join forces to compete in a relay around the campus. In a tight finish, Scott House were the winners of the 2022 Wollaston Dash. Our Marketplace stalls created a great atmosphere as students and staff tested their skills and enjoyed the food on offer. The Principal’s Cup was held during the lunchbreak, pitting our staff and Year 12 students against each other in a competitive game of volleyball. For the first time in a long time our students came out as the victors, sparking wild celebrations on and off the court! Our day concluded with all students coming together in their Houses and participating in a number of activities and games lead by our student leaders, House Coordinators and Heads of House.  Our community’s generosity enabled us to raise $2000 for Anglicare WA.

LEC Primary Coordinator, Gabriella Slattery from the ACC Inclusive Athletics Carnival

On Friday 9th September, a group of selected students attended the ACC Inclusive Athletics Carnival at McGillivray Oval in Mt Claremont. The carnival was an opportunity for students with additional needs to participate in a variety of events, against students from over 18 different schools.  All students had a great day, running their fastest, throwing their furthest and having fun making new friends in the process. It was incredible to witness the enthusiasm, talent and exceptional sportsmanship of the students, as they represented John Wollaston with pride. A special congratulations to Year 7 student, Ava-Jade Thom for taking out first place in the Under/15 70m sprint.

YOHFest

Act-Belong-Commits YOHFest celebrates wellbeing and community by challenging students to use creative mediums to produce their own performances or art based around a new theme each year. This year John Wollaston students competed for the first time and worked around the theme of “Wellness”.

Drama: “Self-Talk”

The year 10 Drama class worked together since Term 1 to brainstorm their understanding of wellness. They decided to focus on self-talk and the inner-voice, exploring the way we speak to ourselves internally and how we believe others perceive us vs. how we perceive ourselves. The class divided scenes and worked together two write a script for performance which featured Maddie and Kimberley, who were each followed by a shadow which became the personified version of their inner-voice. One character was focused on positive self-talk, while the other negative. Using positive strategies both characters had a more positive, affirming inner-voice by the end of the performance.

Their play was well-received and they were given a Certificate of Merit for their Comprehensive Look at the Health Topic.

Dance Duo: “Control”

Year 9 students, Emily Beaman and Sienna Macri, formed the John Wollaston dance team to perform Control. This dance represents the significance of everyone's mental well-being and how it can be difficult to control at times. It also shows the importance of watching out for your friends because you never know when they may be struggling. The dance was beautifully choreographed and they received very positive feedback from the judges and they were given a Certificate of Artistic Merit.

Dance Solo: “Lovely”

Emily Beaman performed the Dance solo “Lovely”. This contemporary dance explored how an individual can struggle with their wellness and that it is okay to not be okay all the time. It verifies the need to look introspectively to work towards a better future.

Emily received a Certificate of Merit for Creative Endeavour.

Year 11 student Matthew Rogers also attended as the technician for all three performance teams, operating the lighting, music and projections during the show. Matt was given the opportunity to have in depth discussions about theatre tech and learn about how to program a lighting plan, set up music and operate projections in performance.

The students all represented the school well, exhibiting excellent backstage manners, camaraderie and receiving many compliments and comments from venue staff about how well they worked together and their polite natures and behaviour during the event.
