Around the Secondary Classes

Year 8 STRIVE - Term 3

Our STRIVE program is designed to engage Year 8 students with the environments around them, with a specific focus on the city, the mountain (kunanyi) and the River Derwent.

Throughout Term Three, students will be encouraged to reflect on how they are connected to the city, mountain and river, and the connections between these key aspects of Hobart’s geography. The experiences are intended to promote students' thinking and awareness of the world around them and develop life skills and personal growth. There is also a particular focus in Term 3 on movement, physical activity and students challenging themselves.

Throughout the the term, students will all participate in:

  • a mountain walk in the alpine areas on the Eastern face or summit area of kunanyi
  • a 60 minute structured self-defence lesson
  • a 60 minute guided Yoga session
  • a kayaking experience along the Western shoreline of the Derwent River, around Sandy Bay

Tools for Transition

Our Tools for Transition students have been studying self-care, health, and beauty. As part of this unit, they researched hair, skin, and nail care for teenagers. They also investigated other aspects of the beauty world including the ethical use of animals and chemicals in make-up and skin care.

Last Thursday, we were lucky enough to have a visit from Britt Attard , owner of Enhanced Hair and Beauty Lindisfarne and alumni of Mount Carmel. Britt spoke to the students about her top tips for hair care and how to analyse hair. She also showed them how to use a hair straightener correctly to style hair. Bridie Callinan, Year 10, who has wavy hair, had her hair straightened and Lita White, Year 10, and Lisa Grant, Year 9, had their hair curled. Britt then showed the students a quick and easy way to braid their hair, using Nicola Newland, Year 10, as a model.

Throughout this experience, Britt also shared valuable information about apprenticeships and what is involved in becoming a hairdresser. Thank you to Britt for her sharing her time and experience with us.

Service Learning

Service Learning is a new elective this year for students in Years 9 and 10.  The purpose of this elective is to go beyond ourselves and give to others.  The girls have been hard at work developing their knowledge and skills to ensure they can make worthwhile contributions to society.  Each week, with thanks to the help of Ms Linda Melia, a group of students have been cooking soups and biscuits to assist the work of Loui's Van.

Another group, under the guidance of Mrs Wendy Wallis, have helped construct books with braille.

This week alone eight students are volunteering their lunchtimes to help Legacy with their annual Legacy Week fundraising.
