A Word from the Principal

Fiona Nolan

My father has always been the brains trust of our family. During the evening meal, on long stretches of roads travelled, my father used these as opportunities to have deep conversations around ethical and philosophical current events and scenarios.  My mother would get frustrated by the robust discussions and the continuous chatter of the four children.  My father however, was in his element. Through discussion, my father led us to some significant conclusions - around the dignity of all human life; that strength is found in understanding the problems we face and accepting help when it is offered.

My father’s thirst for knowledge and for understanding continues. His manner and approach is very different from my mother but it is complimentary. I have often written about the fact that I feel very privileged to have grown up in a family that provided me with the complexities that helped me build the skills to navigate life. I feel privileged to have been able to be educated and to have a profession that brings me much joy. I feel privileged to belong to the Mount Carmel community.

As we stop to celebrate those who have provided care to us as “fathers”, mentors and carers, it is timely to remember that they are a part of a larger community that surrounds us. All of these provide elements of the whole, after all it takes a “Village to raise a child” and a community to support and protect the Village.

As families gather this weekend to hold their fathers, grandfathers and future fathers close, let us remember that these relationships bring value to our lives, that we need to take the time to nurture them and grow them.  A huge shout out of thanks to those who father us.
