GRADE 3 & 4 HOOP TIME

A great time was had by all Grade 3 & 4 students who participated in last week’s Diamond Valley Junior Hoop Time.

Quick shout out to all the parents, and our Grade 6 Sport Captains, who came along to encourage the students, score, coach and even referee. The day wouldn’t have been able to go ahead without this support – so THANK YOU!

COMMUNITY SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS

Congratulations to Marlow P (5JR), Ella B (5JR), Josie E (3MH), Zoe A (5RE), Tilly A (3MH) and Ivy B (5JR), who played their last game of the YJFL season on Sunday, for St Mary’s Greensborough Junior Football Club. The Greenhills influence didn’t stop with the players - the team was also coached by ex-Greenhills student, Matilda E, who is such a positive role model for the girls.

The team enjoyed a very successful year, winning 7 games - a great effort given only 6 out of the final 25 girls had played footy before.

Keep on kicking goals, girls!

If your child achieves something special (grand final win, most valuable player award, best and fairest etc.), please email me (jordan.daley@education.vic.gov.au) through photos and an overview of the achievement to post in Contact. It is important to celebrate and recognise such successes with the school community.

CONNECTED SCHOOLS

3 strategies to build and encourage listening in our children

by Dr Justin Coulson

#1 Gentle Reminders

Call your child by name. Look at them and quietly remind them of the issue that’s requiring focus. The fewer words you use the better. Two is ideal. For example, "Your bedroom", "Your stinky socks", "The dishes", and so on. Say please, and smile kindly.

#2 Work on it together

Being told to go and carry out a task alone can feel both isolating and punishing. Often the tasks we ask our children to complete can also feel overwhelming, even when it’s within their capability to complete. You’ll often find that you don’t need to do much while you’re "working together". Sometimes simply being present, talking, and offering gentle guidance (like humorously saying, "what are the first three things you’re going to put away in this catastrophe of a bedroom?") is enough to get them going.

#3 Context

Your child might be perfectly capable of going to bed on time most nights, but on a sleepover night (or some other major event), the context changes. Demanding perfect behaviour at a funeral might make sense and be a sign of respect, but if they’re grieving and confused, or if all of their cousins are there and they’re excited, we might need to adjust our expectations. Requiring our children to listen to us the same way in every context is akin to expecting our children to act like robots. Be mindful of context.
