Independent Reading

Reading Update

Across Year 7 and Year 8, our English team has been working hard this term to expand our independent reading program at ECSC. In semester 1, we have focused primarily on reader engagement and have loved watching students borrow books from the library and choose texts of interest to them. As we have  moved forward with our reading, we have begun to develop our focus on explicitly teaching key skills of reading in English. This is being done through one on one conferencing and goal setting sessions with students and our Reader Response journals.

All English teachers have reported an increase in reader engagement during our reading time, especially with our year 8 students, which is a fantastic achievement! Over the year we will continue to develop our program to further extend our readers and grow their comprehension, fluency, decoding and vocabulary skills. In line with our Annual Implementation Plan, the overall focus for the English team is to support students to improve their ability to make inferences, however we also want to grow in all other areas of reading.

All students have an independent reading book that they can take home and read. You can support your child by encouraging them to read at home and discussing their books with them.
