Term Three Interschool Sport

On Monday 22nd July, our legendary year 8 students went to Sunbury to participate in the Mickleham Division soccer and AFL tournaments. The teams had developed a strong team chemistry due to preparation at training and team meetings to discuss game plans and positioning.

Both soccer teams were excited once they arrived at Langama Park and ready to play in cold and windy conditions for the day. The boys soccer team played amazing all day and registered two wins and two draws which placed them in first place to progress to the Northern Metropolitan Region Finals. Kai Spaseski, Syon Jain and Abdurahman Mohamed ran tirelessly all day and provided elite delivery to their teammates to ensure they had scoring opportunities. In contrast, our defenders Ramy Abdelmessih, Fateh Bhullar and Jovan Antony were unstoppable in defence, as the boys did not concede one goal all day. The boys demonstrated great respect towards each other, their opponents and the referees in all matches which was equally as important as their outstanding results.

The girls soccer team were lucky enough to progress to the Northern Metropolitan Region Finals as well for the second year straight as they begin to display dominance in the Mickleham division. The girls also ended up in first place after recording two wins and two draws. The girls defenders held their positioning extremely well all day led by Shahd Saleh, Aisha Dabab and Batool Lafta. Tia displayed her elite skills as she dribbled around opposition players all day with ease and scored multiple goals to help us secure wins. Our midfielders Rossy Selman, Liliana Ladoo and Emmanuela Kanavos ran all over the ground, dominated the play with their effort, tackling strength, and improved passing skills.

The debut of the Edgars Creek Secondary College football team was a highly anticipated event. The boys were extremely excited to do the school proud. The enthusiasm was only matched by the boys drive to succeed. The debut game for the school was a huge success with the ECSC footy team winning 47 – 9 in a dominate performance from the midfield. Goals coming from William Micelotta, Atar Singh and Jude Georgievski. The second game saw Jackson Dines and Daniel Rakhlin play extremely well off the back flanks with the opposition struggling to get the ball past the wall in defence otherwise known as Ezekiel Lilomaiava. Some brilliant efforts from the boys saw them quickly progress into the grand final and a chance to move onto the next round. However, the boys fell short losing to a very well drilled side. I would like to thank all students involved as it was an honour to represent the school for the very first time.

All students who represented our year 8s at the Mickleham Division year 8 sport displayed our school values, sportsmanship and played to the best of their abilities which was enjoyable to watch.

On Monday 5th August, some of the best athletes from Edgars Creek travelled down to Meadowglen International Athletics Stadium to participate in the Mickleham Division Athletics. The students all trained exceptionally well and participated to the best of their capabilities on the day. There were some outstanding performers which included Jude Georgievski and Stefan Zoric who won their individual events. Jude Georgievski has progressed for both long jump and triple jump after winning both events quite easily and will look to make the state finals again later in the year. Stefan Zoric was as quick as lightning when he won both the 100m and 200m races by large margins. All four of our relay teams were amazing due to the amount of practice they all completed prior to the day. Our year 12/13 year old boys, 12/13 year old girls and 14 year old girls all came first to progress to the second round after recording very fast times. The 12/13 year old boys consisted of Stefan Majmunovic, Abdurahman Mohamed, Sunny Ly and Stefan Zoric. The 12/13 year old girls consisted of Emilia Forte, Mia Trajkov, Melisa Demollari and Mia Ilievska. The 14 year old girls consisted of Tia Pucakoski, Liliana Ladoo, Rossy Selman and Aleyna Yon. The winning students will participate in the Northern Metropolitan Region Finals on Wednesday 4th September at Meadowglen International Athletics Stadium.

On 8th August, our year 8 boys headed to Darebin International Sports Centre to participate in the NMR soccer finals. The boys were motivated and prepared to represent our school to the best of their abilities all day. They started the day impressively taking a 1-0 lead into half time of our first day. However, the other team got two late goals to win the game against us 2-1 which influenced the energy levels of the group. The boys became reinvigorated with energy by the next game but unfortunately came up short against a strong University High School outfit as we lost 5-2. The boys started off the last game winning 1-0 before running out of energy and losing 8-1. Abdurahman Mohamed looked like Cristiano Ronaldo multiple times throughout the day and not only provided scoring opportunities but displayed physicality as he defended strongly to prevent the other teams from keeping possession. Overall the boys effort was commendable and they progressed one round further than 2018, now they are all motivated to improve as we strive to make the state finals next year in year 9.

On 12th August, our year 8 girls went to Darebin International Sports Centre to try and improve on their previous attempt at progressing past the NMR finals. The girls had two round games they had to win to progress to the grand final. The first game they all played very well but the opposition in University High School held structure and were able to beat us 3-0. The girls then played against Northcote and lost 5-1. The girls were constantly positive with each other and cheered when somebody did something that was impressive. Hala Assad was an unbeatable force when goalkeeper most of the day, stopping around 20 one-on-one situations causing other teams to become frustrated at their lack of ability to convert scoring opportunities. Tia Pucakoski and Liliana Ladoo ran all over the ground and dominated play when having possession of the ball and displayed strong tackling abilities to help us create scoring opportunities but unfortunately we still could not convert chances. The girls will look to train and improve their skills and game play in preparation for soccer in year 9, as they will also aim to make the state finals. Overall, I was proud of the effort and enthusiasm shown by both boys and girls teams throughout their respective tournaments as they played to the best of their ability and improved every game.

On the 13th of August, our year 7 boys went to Darebin International Sports Centre to compete in their very first NVR finals. The boys started quite slow and were down 1-0 at half time but with a quick pep talk we broke the drought with a lovely strike from Haseeb. Unfortunately, in the dying seconds the other team scored so our first game was a loss. To the boys credit this only lit a fire within the boys with Nicholas and Michael being extremely prominent in attack in the second game. The boys went up 2-0 with Phillip Deak putting two lovely balls into the back of the net. However, playing two games in a row took its toll with some tired boys causing lapses and eventually the other team scoring the equaliser in the last three seconds of play.  A draw meant that the boys had to win the last game and to their credit great defence from Jaylahn and Stefan allowed for an early scoring opportunity for Stefan. With the boys on the verge of making the grand finale, it was just not to be. The defence that held strong all day allowed a single goal in the dying minute, which resulted in a draw. A few great efforts from Bailey W-J and Stefan Zoric really demonstrated the boy’s character and resilience. For all the boys who played it was super impressive and we can’t wait to build a stronger team moving into year 8.
