Junior School News

WELCOME BACK!!

We hope you all had a restful break and a Happy Easter! Hope the Easter Bunny hopped over to your house with some delicious treats.

The start back to term 2 has been a disjointed one. With 2 days at school and one day off for Anzac Day then back to school. The second week, broken up by Twilight School and Cross Country. It has been a fun start to term 2.

Cross Country

Wow we have some speedy runners in Junior School!! Luckily the weather held off and we were off and racing after playtime on Thursday. All the students had such a great time! Plenty of cheering, laughing and running. Thank you to all our parent helpers and the families that came to cheer and support all the students.

Old Fashioned Games

In our unit on History this term we have been looking at old fashioned toys and games. We have been comparing old toys and new. Last week we were able to get outside in the sunshine and play some old fashioned games - jump rope, quoits, knuckles, pick up sticks, stilts and hoops. It was fantastic to see the students playing with these time honoured games and pieces of equipment. There were so many smiles and happy faces. Many students choosing to make up their own games with the equipment. A great way to spend a sunny afternoon. This History unit will be concluded next week with our excursion to the Melbourne Museum where we will investigate what is in Grandmother's Toybox.

Maths

MONEY MONEY MONEY!

In maths this term we have been looking at money! Students have been recognising and ordering coin values. We have been using coins to make $1 in different ways and we have been adding money and making change. You can help your child by giving them a pile of loose change and asking them to count it for you. It has been a great fun unit of real life maths.

Non Fiction Texts

In reading this term we have been looking at non fiction texts. Students have been looking at the different features that we find in a non fiction book, such as photographs, labels, headings, title page, index, contents, glossary etc. You can encourage your child to borrow books from the library that are non fiction and spending some time with them reading and discussing the facts found in the book. All the students have been so excited to read new facts about different topics.

ANZAC Day

Whilst ANZAC day is a holiday for us all, in Junior School we read a few books to explain the significance of the day of remembrance to the students. There are so many fantastic books published that explain war situations and this year in Junior School we chose to share the following books. Please ask your child what they learned from reading these books and discussing them in class. There were some great conversations about war, sacrifice, compassion and why we should remember the past.

ANZAC Ted - The Beach The Called Gallipoli - The Little Stowaway (based on a true story set in WW1 but highlights the need for compassion in wartime).
