The Arts

CALYSTA MORGAN

Acting Head of Arts

On Thursday 30th May, a dozen excited and slightly apprehensive JS students traveled, ukuleles and sheet music in hand, to the Hawthorn Arts Centre to participate in the Boroondara Eisteddfod. Luckily, the section before was running over time, so our students got to see some of the amazing string ensembles before our performance. As this was the first time we’ve entered an Eisteddfod, the section we competed in was an un-scored/non-competitive one, so the group could get the experience of this level of performance, without the pressure of also being judged.

Thank you to Miss Lucy for accompanying us (and ending up with a car full of ukuleles!), the Vlahos family for their support, and Uke club families in general for coming out of their way to see their children. A repeat performance at JS Assembly on Friday 21st June meant that the rest of the Junior School could also celebrate the hard work and enthusiasm of the Uke Club.

Notice of Upcoming Events:

Tuesday July 30: A Night At The Theatre “Come to the Formal” and celebrate the work of our Music, Drama and Dance students, in a cabaret-style evening. Food and drink available before each performance.

Thursday 1st August: Instrumental Soirée to kick off ARTS IN AUGUST, our instrumental students will take over the Conference Centre and 9Ways once again, to present individual performances. Students are encouraged to “Bring a Friend” to join them on the evening. Friends, performers and families are also invited to enjoy tea, coffee and biscuits, and to have a chat with our instrumental teachers and other families.

More Arts in August activities will be advertised as they are confirmed. Most will be during lunchtime, and free for students to participate in. MS/SS students should also look out for sign-up sheets for OG’s Got Talent, as we build up to discovering who takes out the Star Performer Trophy for 2019!

Lunchtime Art Club

Art Club is a new lunchtime activity that takes place once a week on Tuesdays, in the Senior School Art room with Ms Sarroff. Art Club is an informal time for Middle School and Senior School students to enjoy being creative, while mixing with other students. Activities will range from ceramics, painting, stencils, sculpture and drawing. Working from the pottery wheel will also be introduced during these sessions at a later date.

All students interested in participating in these activities, or who wish to learn, are welcome to attend. No art experience necessary. During the year, students will have the opportunity to see what others create, learn new skills and possibly make new friends. Students may bring their lunch, bring a friend, and play music. We think this is all very exciting, so watch this space.
