MATHS

Maths & English Cross Age Tutoring

Peer tutoring is starting up again for 2018! It will run on Monday afternoons from 3.00 pm to 3.45 pm in the VCE Study Hall (while the Library is out of action).

All students from Years 7 to 9 are invited to bring along their classwork, homework sheets or a book to get assistance with.

This program was very successful last year and I can’t wait to see it continue this year. Parental permission is required. We recommend students to bring a note along to the session.

Hope to see you there!

Pi Day

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 (3/14) around the world.  Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in Mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.

Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern.

While only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations, Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize and to computationally calculate more and more digits.

This year, the challenge is to see which student can recite Pi to the most decimal places.

The competition will be held in the Middle School Quadrangle on Wednesday 14 March. So get practicing!!

Calculators

Cas Calculators

All Year 10 Mathematics students (except Pathway Mathematics) and VCE Mathematics students require a CAS calculator to effectively study the subject.  Calculators can be purchased from the General Office for $210.

Ti-30 XB MultiView Calculator

Students in Years 7 to 9 are encouraged to use the Ti-30 XB MultiView Calculator, which are available from Lilydale Books for $28.95.
