(3) Winner of the Australian Scout Medallion
Congratulations to Rhys Bennett, who was presented with the Australian Scout Medallion on 6 May 2017. This is the highest award earned by Scouts aged 11 to 14 years old.
The Australian Scout Medallion has three components:
1. The Green Cord
2. The Leadership Course
3. The Leadership Activity
(1) The Green Cord
Scouts progressively work through their award scheme requirements independently of the other parts of the medallion. On completion, the Troop Council approves the presentation of the Green Cord. The Troop Council is a collection of fellow Scouts from their troop who meet together to discuss and decide various matters for the troop such as program, standards and expectations, troop finances, approval of activities, camps and various award achievements and of course, eligibility and completion of the Australian Scout Medallion.
(2) The Leadership Course
The Leadership Course is a two-day course run for 13- and 14-year-old Scouts. It covers various aspects of leadership such as delegation, team building, decision making, communication, problem solving, creativity and dealing with "difficult" Scouts and situations.
To successfully complete the requirements of the leadership course the Scout must return to their own troop and, over a period of time, continue to display in their troop activities the leadership skills that have been learnt and reinforced on the course.
(3) Leadership Activity
Nearly all Scouts who are working towards their Australian Scout Medallion are Patrol Leaders. Patrols are groups of Scouts (normally 5 to 6 Scouts) and the patrol system underpins the aims of the Scout section.
