Year 9,10 and 11 Indonesian Study students recently had an opportunity to immerse themselves in the cultural experience of the Indonesian Film Festival 2017, as well the traditional food of Indonesia. This excursion trip was an important moment in our learning as part of the Victorian Curriculum Strand-Understanding and Sub-strand Systems of Language. Additionally, it’s a great social experience that provides us the opportunity to encounter and explore the Indonesian Culture. We attended the movie Surau and Silek screening at the Hoyts Cinema Melbourne Central. It was a beautiful movie filled with the culture of Minangkabau in West Sumatra Indonesia. The movie was unique, yet amazing traditional martial-art, Silek/Silat. The language used in the movie is mostly Indonesian and English Subtitled.

Student’s Reflections:

On Wednesday the 25th of October, 30 Year 9 and Senior Indonesian students went by train to the city to expand their knowledge and practice what the students had learnt in class in real world scenarios. These included a visit to an Laguna Asian supermarket to purchase Indonesian snacks for a private viewing of Surau dan Silek, a movie featured in the Indonesian Film Festival 2017, in Hoyts Melbourne Central, focusing on traditional martial arts, and the importance of teamwork and dedication. The movie involved an orphan who wanted to excel in something to make his late father proud of him. He discovers Silek (a martial art) when his uncle teaches him but when he decides to leave the village and go to the city for work, the boy is left devastated. Eventually their search for a new instructor leads them to Johar, a retired university teacher and a former silek warrior. It's Johar who teaches them the true meaning of silek. Johar is successful in introducing the grand philosophy of silek to the children and the boy realises that silek is not about competition, silek is to make friends; and mentally, it is to seek God.

From there, the students, along with LOTE teachers Ibu Caralilo and Ibu Dux went to Pondok Rempah Rempah on Elizabeth Street to order in Indonesian a traditional meal consisting of fried rice, chicken and egg. That delicious lunch capped off the day and we all made our way back to the College. All the Indonesian students that attended on the day would like to extend their thanks to Ms Dux in organising this very enjoyable and informative excursion!

Earlier this term, a class of year 9 Indonesian students travelled into the city to learn more about the language along with senior LOTE students, Ibu Dux and Ibu Caralilo. In the city they had access to numerous sources of Indonesian culture. Firstly, we went to a Laguna Asian supermarket to try foreign foods that aren't available to us in the shops we visit regularly. Next, we headed to the cinemas to watch an Indonesian film along with another school from Warnambool. The movie, 'Surau dan Silek', focused on the connection between martial arts and religion and the sharing of knowledge between different generations. We were able to ask questions about the film afterwards to three teachers who were born in the region. From there, we went to a great Indonesian restaurant called Pondok Rempah Rempah. We were spoiled with fried rice, chicken, egg and a salad that delighted our tastebuds. With our stomachs full and a greater understanding of Indonesian culture, we then headed back to school.

Early in term 4, the year 9, 10, 11 and 12 Indonesian students went on a trip to the city. On the trip we practiced our speaking, reading and listening skills whilst having fun. We shopped at an Indonesian supermarket, saw an Indonesian movie and ate lunch at an Indonesian restaurant. First we went to the Indonesian supermarket to stock up on things to eat while we watched the movie. The restaurant sold all things Indonesian, from Indonesian soft drinks to Traditional fish delicacies. After the supermarket we went to the cinema. The movie we watched was about 3 young Indonesian boys who wanted the traditional Indonesian form of martial arts. When the movie finished we walked to an Indonesian restaurant where we ate lunch. For lunch we ate fried rice, chicken, egg and stir fried vegetables. The whole experience enhanced our Indonesian skills and taught us more about the Indonesian culture.

On Wednesday 25 October, both Year 9 and senior students travelled into the city to learn more about the Indonesian culture. We first went to Laguna Asian Supermarket to purchase Indonesian snacks and beverages. We then made our way to the Hoyts cinema, where we watched ‘Surau dan Silek’, an Indonesian film about 3 young boys learning the Indonesian martial art of Silek, as well as Indonesian religion.

After the movie, we travelled to an Indonesian restaurant. We were treated to nasi goreng (fried rice) as well as ayam goreng (fried chicken). The dish was well presented.

A special thanks to Ms Dux and Ms Carollilo for an interesting and exciting excursion to learn more about the Indonesian culture.
