Grade 1 Report

Living Eggs Program

The grade 1 students had lots of fun learning all about how chicks hatch.

They created life cycle posters and also wrote a description about their favourite chick.

The students were able to hold the chicks and learnt many interesting facts.

A big thank you to the families that adopted our little chicks.

We know they are in great hands!!

Reading

Reading is a continual and gradual process. It is very important that parents continue to listen to your child read every night, even for a short time. It is essential to fill in the yellow take home book log for us to keep track of your child reading at home. Here are some reading strategies that you can do to help your child:

·         Before reading, talk about the cover, the title, the pictures, and discuss what the book may be about.

·         After reading is finished, talk and ask questions about the story and the pictures. Your child’s understanding of the text is very important to progress.

Spelling/ Sounds

Your child will need to continue to practise spelling words at home. They must also remember to bring this book in every day to school. Here are some activities that you can do at home:

·         Write your words in fancy writing.

·         Write each sound in a different colour.

·         Play memory or snap with your spelling words on pieces of paper.

In Term 3, these are the sounds that we will be learning:

o – nose            a - baby

oa – boat          ay - tray

ow – snow         a_e - tape

o_e – note         ai - snail

Writing

This term we have been focusing on narrative writing. We have written about Jack and the Beanstalk in the early weeks of Term 3. You can continue to encourage your child to write and create their own stories at home. In all our narrative we must have an orientation (who, when and where) as well as a problem and a resolution that solves the problem. We are really enjoying seeing all the creative narratives in our classrooms at the moment.

Maths

The grade ones have been really excited to see our baby chickens hatching in the classroom this week. The children have loved seeing the different developmental stages and we have been able to incorporate their interests into our writing sessions. The students have demonstrated great care and we are looking forward to watching our baby chicks grow!

Swimming

Swimming was a great success last term and we thank all that participated. The parent helpers were so helpful ensuring that the transition between the bus and the pool was timely. The students learnt a range of different strokes and built up their confidence in the water. We would love for you to continue to participate in the swimming program next year.

REMINDERS

Children need:

·         To have a water bottle at school.

·         An extra change of clothing especially due to cold weather.

·         Donations such as dress ups, old toys, cardboards, etc for Investigations.

Thank you to all the fabulous reading helpers this term. We would love to have you again next term and the children absolutely love it! So please contact your child’s teacher if you are available.
