Nossal’s first major House competition event for 2019, held on Tuesday 12 February, was memorable to say the least. Despite some light showers towards the beginning of the day, students from all Houses cheered on and participated in the 50m freestyle events, which ran pretty smoothly. Unfortunately, for the first time in the 10 years of Nossal’s existence, swimming carnival was quickly cancelled soon after, and the majority of the school had to leave due to the spontaneous cold temperatures and extreme rain. Despite the poor weather conditions, quite a few students stayed back - along with the House captains and some teachers - to swim for House points and hopefully qualify for the district competition. Although we were unable to run the 4x50m relays, waterpolo, the plunge, and Year 12 novelty race, points were still awarded in the traditional swimming events.

Special mention should be made of some of Nossal’s best swimmers who dominated their age group category and will advance to the  regional competition and represent our school:

U14s Female: Sophia Zhihan Yang (Garuda)

U14s Male: Jack Silke (Griffin)

U15s Female: Alicia Tran (Pegasus)

 U15s Male: Sahibmeet Singh (Garuda)

U16s Female: Jiny Jeong (Griffin)

 U16s Male: Vincent Nguyen (Garuda)

U17s Female: Amelia Qi (Phoenix)

U17s Male: Dheeraj Kulkarni (Garuda)

18-20s Female: Lily Vo (Phoenix)

18-20s Male: Keisuke Nishimura (Phoenix)

Congratulations to the other Houses and a special shout out to Divnoor, Robert, Lois, Nihar, Asha, and John - the House captains of Garuda, Griffin, and Pegasus. We all collaboratively discussed ideas for hours every night leading up to swimming carnival, chased down House members for emergencies, and spent too much time trying to put together a group costume. Although our collective efforts may have seemingly gone to waste, we are so grateful to get to work alongside such amazing leaders (and even better friends) as you lot. It has been an equal honour to be part of the most close-knit and rivalry-free Year 12 House captain team Nossal has produced (so far)!

Again, a big thank you to everyone who participated in this event, whether it be by swimming, making banners during lunchtimes, volunteering, dressing up, or singing house chants. We look forward to many more memorable moments in 2019!!

Senior Girls' Cricket

On Monday 11  February, the Senior Girls’ cricket team attended the district cricket competition held at the Heathbrae Recreation Reserve in Officer. The team competed against Koo Wee Rup Secondary College in a twenty- twenty format for a position at the regional finals.

After losing the toss the girls were asked to field yet took little time to make an impact. The opening bowlers took early wickets, dismissing both of the opening batters within the first two overs. Adding to the pace and accuracy of opening bowlers Hasna and Moksha, the team maintained pressure both in their bowling and fielding efforts and wickets continued to fall. Quick dismissals of the middle order by Shalaka and fellow team mates reduced Koo Wee Rup to an early innings conclusion.

Koo Wee Rup Secondary College were dismissed for 37 runs after 12 overs. This was aided by the jovial efforts of wicket keeper, Divnoor, who took many catches and remained composed behind the stumps. Further, passion and excitement in the field and in support of one another when wickets fell was demonstrative of the high level of camaraderie and team work that the team possessed.

In response, and despite the loss of two early wickets, the team were able to make the 38 runs required with many overs to spare.

The senior girls’ cricket team will be participating in the regional finals later this term.

Senior Boy’s Cricket

On Monday 11 February we ventured out to Holm’s Reserve in Berwick to play a round robin cricket tournament. In the first match we played Pakenham SC. We batted first and amassed a nice little total of about 150 from the 15 overs we faced. Daniel Cameron was in sparkling form and scored a very well compiled 72 runs. At one stage it appeared that he might be able to threaten the record score held by a Nossal student which is believed to be 85. It wasn’t to be. Omair Siddiqi and Shishir Kulkarni batted really well too.

In return Pakenham was soon in trouble, losing a wicket in the second over. From there they lost wickets steadily. In a masterstroke Aranna Shrestha Saha was brought on at the end with the aim of beguiling the opposition with his amazing repertoire of spin bowling. This is exactly what he did, taking a great little hat-trick. Pakenham was all out for 37. We won!

In the second match we played KooWeeRup SC which had won their match against Kambrya. This game turned out to be one which would go down to the wire. We batted first, opening again with the already proven partnership of Daniel and Omair. Both did great jobs again and against some very tight bowling we made a great start, putting on about 50 for the first wicket. Daniel again scored well and managed 30. Perhaps a kind person would observe that he scored 102 runs for Nossal that day. Our first century? Shishir again batted well, and at the end of the innings we had scored exactly 100 from our 15 overs. We did get an early wicket, with Shishir enticing the opening batsman to snick the ball to our keeper Sean Lindsay who accepted it with glee.

Unfortunately, we then proceeded to drop two catches which, against quality opposition, was something we couldn’t afford. The match was very tight though and it came down to the last over. They needed 6 runs from the last over and by the third ball they had them. And then it was over. We lost!

All in all, despite the result, it was a great day and the boys represented the school with distinction and should be proud of their efforts.

Nossal's cricket season is not over, though. In September a school from New Zealand, John McGlashan SC, will again be visiting us to play cricket. This event will be open to all Year levels to play in .
