Educated for Excellence

Prepared for Life

Our motto was front and centre this week as we said farewell to the year 12 Class of 2017. At the final whole school assembly, and again at Valedictory Dinner where students were presented with their certificates of year 12 completion, my message to students centred around the Mount Eliza Secondary College approach to education.

Excellence is important. It is something towards which we all strive and towards which we encourage our students to aspire. But it does not simply refer to academic achievement as whilst this is important in some contexts such as gaining entrance to tertiary courses, it is by no means the only definition. Excellence of effort, excellence in the development of values and excellence in the way we interact with others are critical aspects of each of us as individuals, and these are the qualities that will define us in life.

Education at MESC most certainly supports those students who wish to excel academically, but importantly it also dedicates time and attention to the 'life skills'. Programs such as IDEEA lab and Personal Futures actively build capacity in problem solving, global awareness, collaboration, creative thinking and community activity. Our approach to all other programs also integrates these opportunities and expectations for our students, and in combination, this focus is unique to our college, and something we are proud to promote as a 'point of difference' to other government and private schools.

I wish the graduating class of 2017 every future success, good health and happiness.

Deb Hill (Class of 2016)

Deb has just been accepted into the prestigious Ancora Imparo Leadership Program at Monash University.

The name means ‘still I learn’ and is for students entering the second year of their degree. It provides the opportunity for personal leadership development, and for extended learning in the areas of ethics, philosophy and social responsibility. Deb credits her inclusion in the program to her experiences here at MESC.

We are very proud of her success as a member of the VCE class of 2016.
